Braves at Brewers; Monday, June 9 @ 6:40 p.m.: Aaron Civale (5.19 ERA, 5.49 FIP) vs. Chris Sale (2.93 ERA, 2.92 FIP)

I gained a little false hope during the Brewers recent hot streak … but this is a .500 team that can’t beat six or more NL teams that will make the playoffs

Hopefully they catch fire & prove me wrong or fade so we can offload a few players before the trade deadline next month

I’m excited for the future Brewers but I’ve accepted that this group is nothing special … mediocre to the core

I've been following this team since 1997 (I was 11 years old), is this offense worse than the early 2000s or am I just not remembering how bad those lineups were? Serious question.

I wouldn't mind a Geoff Jenkins or Richie Sexson in this lineup

I’d even take Ronnie Belliard

The “best” hitter on this team has a .792 OPS.

That is a 9 hole hitter in L.A or New York.

It’s a serious, serious problem. They are numerous hitters away.

The Brewer whiff boys are out once again. 11 Ks in only 18 outs. Extremely difficult to win when they only put 7 balls in play in six innings. The Brewers meager offense has now scored a total of 5 runs in 33 innings.

To be fair, Sale was straight up dealing...

This is true, but this has been a problem a lot more than just tonight.

But we couldn't do squat once he left.  This Braves team isn't that great so losing to them like this is pretty dreadful.

Why are they doing a dual post game show with Braves people?  Did I miss something?

This is odd for sure.  Perhaps this may explain why we had a devil of a time finding the stream tonight on prime video.

Perhaps we might have better off not watching that mess......

I looked up the 2002 (106 loss) season. The Brewers OPS was .711.

Before today's game the Brewers OPS was .677. So yes, it seems like they are hitting worse than those bad teams. Especially since that .711 number includes the pitchers of that team. This year's team hits like there are 2-3 pitchers in the lineup.

I'm glad I chose to watch WWE Raw tonight.

I remember the 2002 Brewers having some offense with Sexson, Jenkins, Houston and Hernandez. It was likely a different offensive era 20+ years ago, though.

Pitching was bad for quite awhile back then for Brewers.

Fangraphs has data with wRC+ for that team. Players with greater than 300 PAs:

Name Team G PA HR R RBI SB wRC+
Richie Sexson MIL 157 652 29 86 102 0 125.9809358
José Hernández MIL 152 582 24 72 73 3 118.6010597
Matt Stairs MIL 107 315 16 41 41 2 115.8978079
Jeffrey Hammonds MIL 128 510 9 47 41 4 93.04584964
Eric Young Sr. MIL 138 553 3 57 28 31 88.86027045
Alex Sanchez MIL 112 435 1 55 33 37 87.79320754
Ronnie Belliard MIL 104 317 3 30 26 2 41.843211

So when compared to current qualified players:

Name Team G PA HR R RBI SB wRC+
Rhys Hoskins MIL 63 243 9 21 36 2 120.7287315
Sal Frelick MIL 64 253 4 25 21 12 112.2326385
Christian Yelich MIL 64 272 13 34 41 10 106.4198555
Brice Turang MIL 64 275 4 43 25 15 101.6128029
William Contreras MIL 62 264 5 35 27 5 99.42435652
Jackson Chourio MIL 66 296 10 39 37 13 95.59571267
Joey Ortiz MIL 65 226 2 23 9 6 44.81681666

The two teams are similar.  Belliard was limited to 317 PAs for the season.  Ortiz is on pace to smash that.
