I bet when Hoskins is ready Bauers will get cut/released.

Or by that time there will be 28 men on the roster & the fact that Hoskins, Bauers & Vaughn are all 1B will be sort of moot & all three might be kept.

But Hoskins certainly could have value as a PH/possible DH vs LHP (at times) so if it comes down to either/or, I agree Bauers will most likely go.

Exactly.  Or as said earlier give Vaughn an occasional break at 1st.

Barring another injury or something I don’t think Hoskins will be ready before September 1 Then he will be a candidate to be the extra position player added to the roster.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see both Hoskins and Bauer on the roster with Siegler the odd man out. No need to worry about it now as something might happen that makes it a non issue

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

If there are extra roster spots then maybe.   I really don’t like having a bench guy that can’t play any position

and Btw I don’t know what the purpose of Jansen is.   He’s not better than Haase.    And might be worse

Quero is also looking ready.  Doesn't yet have the "pop" they traded for Jansen to get, but nor have we seen any of that poppage.

By pretty much every measurement, Jansen is as good or better than Haase. I like Haase as well as the next guy but he went unclaimed by every single MLB team  when he was DFAed.

In addition to that, having Jansen allows us to keep Haase in AAA for depth and injury protection.

We're all entitled to our opinion, and I think Haase was a good soldier with a great attitude who definitely contributed.

But I'm pretty sure that if a team was making a multi-player trade with someone who wanted a catcher in return & was given a choice of Haase or Jansen, most if not all would choose Jansen.

When Haase was DFA’d he went unclaimed and passed through waivers. Jansen got $8.5M as a free agent from the Rays to be their primary catcher.

From 2021-25 Jansen and Haase are among 36 catchers with at least 1,000 PA, here are their ranks…

Haase: 1,171 PA (30th)
89 wRC+ (22nd)
1.7 WAR (31st)

Jansen: 1,367 PA (26th)
108 wRC+ (11th)
7.3 WAR (13th)

I’m sort of terrified for the mental health of this board, including my own, the first time we see Andrew Vaughn missing from the lineup card in favor of Jake Bauers, because we all know that is absolutely happening sometime in the next week.

😄Yeah, the pitchforks are already being sharpened. Actually though, has Vaughn sat since coming here other than a team day? For all we know he could use a day next week. I just don't want it to simply be a case of "Jake needs to play".

He's getting there, and has been swinging the bat in AAA, But we're talking about a guy who's missed a full year plus w/a shoulder injury & who is a catcher. Being really cautious, which is frustrating cuz I really like the kid but understandable.

For those who don't like Bauers & are looking for another option, the White Sox just DFA'd INF Josh Rojas. He had a WAR of -1.5. The only White Sox position player with a lower one was---you guessed it---the -1.7 turned in by Andrew Vaughn.

😛More work for the pixie dust.😛

Big difference here is that you are living from paycheck to paycheck most likely ... Willy is a multi-millionaire regardless of what team he is playing for and is set for life.

From that position of financial comfort, how about making a stand against the rigged league and staying with your friends/family?

You have to place some fault on the fan.s. We’re dumb enough to pay $50-100 per seat for good seat. After the economy sinks some more MLB will likely have an attendance drop.

I fear the Brewers will miss Ortiz’s stellar defense more than they realize over the next few weeks. I hope it doesn’t cost us a game or two. It seems like organizational malpractice to have no quality options to call on from AAA. I understand all the reasons why not to add Pratt, but he would be a better 40-man option than Berroa. Time will tell. I hope we never miss a beat.

Thanks for the numbers. When I saw the initial post, I was wondering if I was missing something because Jansen seemed head and shoulders above Haase, even as a backup catcher.

Both in 2024 and 2025.

Here's my optimistic case.

Joey's value is just something that accrues really, really slowly. That's less valuable as we get down to 30ish games left and even in a short series. Mona is perfectly fine as a short-term replacement. He'll miss some outs, but your other middle infielder is a genius with the glove, so I doubt it costs us a win.

There's also some big gaps in the advanced metrics. DRS has Ortiz at -2 while OAA has him at +7. I don't buy Mona as in the same ballpark as Ortiz, but at least one advanced metric seems to think the two are very similar.

Still, speedy recovery to Joey. When every base runner is a rally in the playoffs, that's the guy I want up the middle.
