Charlie Becker is very good at football

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Indiana is good at football..... Never thought I'd say that in a hundred years.

Will anyone remember that was 4th down? I doubt it. But had it failed....

My gosh, IU, play some defense. I know I’m traumatized, but that felt like after watching Golden put the Pack back up two scores and then…knifed.

and then he kicks the field goal in a nearly identical situation to go up 6. hope it works out for them.

That was a pretty iffy roughing the passer call

Yeah I don't know what else the guy could've done.  Anyways, ballgame.  Congrats Indiana.  Helluva game.

I doubt I will see a Wisconsin Badger national championship in my lifetime. But I would have considered an Indiana Hoosier national championship even more unlikely.

I’m not even watching this (longstanding antipathy to giving ESPN my money), but I’m getting a very heated play by play from my dad (parents are huge IU alums who have had nothing since Bobby Knight).

I’m really happy for them after that pick!

I have a lot of IU alum friends. Happy for them.

But now I guess I have to start hating IU.

Just think----with all of the hype surrounding Fickell, Longo & the air raid in 2023, imagine if someone would've said that by the end of the 2025 season, Riley Nowakowski would be scoring a TD in the national championship game. Woulda given some folks some wrong-headed ideas...........

For all my railing against the college FB landscape, that WAS one hell of a game.

It seems to me the roughing the passer call is sorta the college FB equivalent of foul calls when someone is shooting a 3-pointer in college BB, where zebras seem to bend over backwards to blow the whistle. A large individual is running headlong towards a QB, and he has no idea if the QB is going to pump-fake & hold the ball, so he needs to keep charging. Officials need to understand this isn't a video game, where you can just hit 'stop' & freeze in place.

I would really like to know what is going on at IU and I really can't believe it's just the coach speak stuff. "He gets guys to play," "he's a details man," etc. There's no way that's it. The first national champion to break the BCR rules and did it by several orders of magnitude. They have to have pinpointed something quantifiable that is forecasting these kids. I'm not saying it isn't great coaching, but that can't be it. There are a litany of other greats who'd have done something similar and there is absolutely nothing that comes even close to this GOAT coaching job. Not saying it's illegal either, but they are doing something drastically different.

I watch minimal college football, but sat down for this one because...Indiana.  Nothing flukey about it, either.  Just the best team.  Glad the two penalties at the end didn't ruin their dream season.  Closer than I thought would be.  But happy for them.  Their fans had it worse than Wisconsin fans 1963-1992.

To switch to a more trivial note, why was the football championship trophy unlike the NCAA championship trophies the other sports are awarded?

The weird part is they swallowed their whistles the whole game and let several roughings go that were worse than this one, yet with the 'let them play' mantra. But then called a borderline one at crunch time with the game on the line.     Also swallowed their whistles on PI the whole game. They did that 'both ways' and were consistent but it benefitted MIA more since they were doing it more.  IU was ahead, in control, and ended up winning in spite of these reffing nitpicks working against them.

Still one heck of a game and story for IU.  And the athletes on MIA D are ridiculous, I assume several 1st rounders there

I think the bottom line is that it is football.  It is the most profitable and visible, so they have to have a different trophy.

Before the current trophy, they had something that was much bigger with a crystal football at the top.  I believe that was used during the BCS bowl era.  The crystal football was prone to breaking when dropped...

Because the College Football Playoff is a separate entity than the NCAA, so it's not an NCAA championship.

His brother was already enrolled. I'm guessing that helped. That team is a lot more than Mendoza.

Outstanding coach + terrific staff that got guys to buy in + Mark Cubans' money.

It also must be pointed out that they had a knack for choosing the right people, although I have no idea how you can figure out how to do that when you throw together a couple dozen portal veterans from every program under the sun. Riley Nowakowski is a great example. A versatile veteran & great team-first guy isn't someone you'd think would attract attention, but he was an important piece.
