Given that the Cubs traded four prospects for Willi Castro and Mike Soroka, I’m glad for what Milwaukee did and did not do.

All while I'm kind of loving Shelby miller in this bullpen, who we got for a PTBNL and removing Jordan Montgomery from the D'Backs roster.

I wonder at what point can any of us question Matt Arnold in any trade again? It's just hit after hit

Have to think a Bauers or Seigler DFA is coming. Hoskins needs a spot and they’ve simply run out of room and time.

Don't think they'd DFA Seigler when they can simply option him to AAA.

Good point. I was thinking Hoskins was put on the 60 but he was not.

With Hoskins not yet announced as activated it's kind of amusing to picture Murph and Arnold sweating out this choice to option Seigler or DFA Bauers, while so many fans would be fine with just flipping a coin or choosing both. 😄

They will probably option Seigler to avoid the DFA of Bauers. They have this odd affinity with Bauers, like he’s somehow essentially to the chemical balance of this organization or something.

I can’t complain though, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see Murphy not budge much on Vaughn starting every day since Bauers returned, even with Vaughn struggling.

9 W - 9 L (with a +4 run differential) so far on the Dreaded Stretch.

We had an 8.0 game division lead entering, and a 6.5 game division lead today.

According to FanGraphs our odds of securing a bye (87.8%) and winning the division (91.1%) entering the stretch have increased to 94.6% and 96.0% as of today.

The Brewers 21 W - 9 L record in August was 2.5 games better than anyone else in MLB for the month.

Is it safe to say the Brewers survived the Dreaded Stretch and maybe even navigated the trade deadline just fine, or am I in a game thread?

The final verdict on the deadline will come in the playoffs.

If the Brewers get beaten in the playoffs by a team that significantly beefed up its bullpen or added a significant veteran bat or two to its bench the Brewers approach might not look so good.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Or it would probably just mean the randomness of baseball got the best of them.

I mean we can’t seriously make much of a case that the Brewers erred in adding a bat like Castro, for example, when Monasterio has been far better and would have been the one to lose the ABs.

I don’t know how many contenders beefed up the bullpen to a greater extent than we did by adding Shelby Miller.

Mason Miller to the Padres of course, but there isn’t a Brewer fan in their right mind that would have been okay with giving up Jesus Made for him, which is what it would have taken.

Bauers is in at 1B today with Perkins in CF and Collins getting the day off. Ortiz is at SS.

If you squint hard you might see Siegler’s potential value, but he hasn’t provided actual value. Bauers would at least be the best defensive first baseman, and offers at least the threat of a home run or XBH.

Interesting that Bauers is behind Yelich today, meaning that Murphy is likely waiting for the inevitable lefty to face Yelich and counter with Vaughn hitting for Bauers.

I’ve been focusing on Siegler, not Monasterio. If Siegler is your only left handed hitting option off the bench, and he looks at a third strike in a key situation,  that is not random.

Someone like Carlos Santana or Castro or several others would have a better chance of success.

You’re not focused on Monasterio because you have the advantage of hindsight to see that he performed well in August. But if we had gone back it and gotten someone at the deadline he definitely would have lost some opportunities in August.

I just don’t see how an upgrade over Seigler would have made much difference. Castro for one certainly hasn’t even been better. Seigler had some opportunities and I think we’ve probably seen enough that he isn’t going to see much more, and will probably either be optioned or see his opportunities dwindle now anyway.

So we weaken the line-up, even with an off day tomorrow?

I don't like it, which means Bauers goes 3 for 4 with a homer and 3 rbis, and Perkins robs a homer at the wall in the 9th inning.

Boy, consider this a non-biased recommendation to be a caretaker. For a site I am on daily, pretty much year-round, I haven’t even thought about an ad popping up for a while. And Brock seems like a good guy.

Maybe @BruisedCrewwill consider this.

Just don't call him boy.

Probably wishful thinking with the LH bats Philly can roll out there, but I'd really like to see Ashby not used today & get three days w/the off day tomorrow. Other than that the BP sets up nicely for this series.

Hoskins being slow-played tells me they're really deliberating re the Seigler/Bauers thing. Also giving themselves a chance to take a look at Urias in Nashville.

Not only the players, but this manager & staff deserves a heck of a lot of credit for navigating through the last 18 games.

Bauers hitting 5th is beyond terrible. I know he may have 3 hits today but it's brutal regardless. There is zero justification and is why I do not trust Murphy come playoffs. He does things that just make you shake your head. Also I didn't miss Ortiz. Why not let Monasterio hot streak play out?

I think you’re missing my point.

What the players did in August is irrelevant. It’s what they might add to a roster in a playoff situation.

Some of the relief pitchers that changed teams at the deadline got off to rocky starts with their new teams and new roles. But if they settle in and provide their teams with a string of strong arms in playoff games those early bad outings will be quickly forgotten
