The White Sox send 31-year old left-hander Anthony Kay in the final game of the series. Kay last appeared in the big leagues in 2023 as a member of the Cubs and Mets. Kay was below replacement level during his 85.1 IP in MLB from 2019-2023 but was quite good in Japan the past two seasons, combining for a 2.49 ERA over 303.1 IP for Yokohama. Kay has one career appearance against Milwaukee on July 3, 2023. This was the "Jahmai Jones game." Kay faced three Brewers without recording an out, including Jones.

Brandon Sproat makes his Brewers debut. Sproat threw 20.2 IP last September for the Mets before coming to Milwaukee in the Freddy Peralta trade.

This is probably dramatic but our season possibly hinges on these next two rotation spots, all things equal. We have an idea what JM, CP, and BW will be ... if Sproat/Harrison live up to the hype we are off and running.

Sunday afternoon game against a lefty. We will find out if we are just running with Bauers full time or which catcher will man 1B in the interim against LHP.

Assuming we get our first Rengifo start today, likely Perkins as well.

I bet Perkins in center to give Garrett Mitchell a day off. Lockridge in LF. Bauers at 1B. Rengifo is better against LHP, he starts at 3B.

Biggest question: will William get a day off from catching before Thursday? Yelich should only DH unless something major happens. It also would be OK to give Yelich a day off periodically.

I’m looking forward to Sproats first start. He only had 4 mlb starts last year but 2 of them he went six innings. So it would be nice if he can get through 5 or 6. I’d expect Koenig and Megill to each get an inning today as well.

it’ll be interesting to see how we fare against a lefty SP down 2 of our 3 main righty bats. Luckily it should be a bit of a soft landing, a guy we should be able to hit.

I understand Ashby only requires eight hours of sleep to be on full rest. We can expect him to be ready if called upon today 🙂

By June, he's going to be practicing throwing with his right arm just to get into more games.

I thought this was worth sharing. Love this view and as soon as Ortiz fields it cleanly both Hall and Contreras clock out. Contreras turns to the ump to thank him and Hall punches his glove to celebrate.

Given that Sproat is a groundball heavy pitcher, I'm curious how the defense with Rengifo & Sanchez at the corners holds up

I think that is valid...but remember the Brewers also have about 4-5 other very viable options in the high minors to fill those rotation spots as the season progresses

Over the 2024/25 seasons the Brewers scored the 4th most runs in MLB (4.89 R/G) while allowing the 2nd fewest runs in MLB (3.94 R/G).

On the FanGraphs Projected Standings page they are currently forecast to score the 20th most runs per game rest of season (4.45 R/G), while allowing the 13th fewest runs per game rest of season (4.41 R/G).

Over the first 326 games Pat Murphy has managed the Brewers they have an almost perfectly matching +325 run differential, FanGraphs computers think the Brewers will run a +7 run differential over their next 160 games.

It’s pretty fascinating, the disconnect. We are told the Brewers cannot possibly keep forcing defensive mistakes at the rate from last year. Sure, maybe. Yet, there was Sean Burke yesterday, making an ill-advised errant throw which led to the Brewers taking control of the game. I saw a desperate pitcher, ground down by tough at-bats, aggressive base-running,  and hustle, taking a chance on a long shot out. One can claim that was random luck but it’s also by design.

Who knew Joey would be hitting 6 someday?

Anyone who knew that Chourio and Vaughn would be out.

The Brewers aren’t a big HR team to start with, but with those two guys out they are laughably weak in RH power hitting.

They are going to see as many LHP as teams can throw at them and it could be pretty ugly

Today’s lineup

I was so looking forward to our right handed lineup against lefty starters this season. Losing both Chourio & Vaughn early in the season makes for this interesting “Sunday afternoon” lineup! Here’s hoping it produces Sweep #1 in what could be a great start to the 2026 season.

And just like that time to do something else.
