I think the only thing that aggravates me is

Are the brewers really in such a state that we have to punt a game against a bad team when we have an off day the next day

we are hurting that bad?

wasn't Ashby really good at one point? is it just regression this season?

He just has really bad command and this year it's been more 30/35 than 40 like it was last year. He's much more inconsistent outing to outing it feels like this year. I wouldn't even say he's bad. He's still our third or fourth best reliever but he definitely looks like a guy who belongs in middle relief right now not leverage.

It's not like we looked into a crystal ball & saw "Pannone vs Webb, therefore 16-3." I suspect this would've been the decision regardless of who was next up in the shuttle, or who was scheduled to pitch for SF today. Like Misiorowski being shut down before the ASB; I think Skenes going for them made it look like some kind of sacrifice. But if Joe Blow were throwing that day for the Pirates I'm sure they would've made the same decision. IMO todays' result was much more about the poor game we played on the field & free bases (most of which had nothing to do with Pannone) than a mismatch on the mound.

They wanted Drohan to get more than 4 days off. The off-day tomorrow was sort of immaterial (actually, it made for a little better scenario with a built-in day off if you needed to use the 'pen quite a bit today).

There are still times when you want to prioritize having a lefty to go to, and I think it's taken a big bite out of the pen with Koenig losing velo & being ineffective, as well as Zerpa getting hurt. Even Fitzpatrick still being available would help. Zerpa certainly is capable of bumping Ashby back if he was healthy.

Hall should be back soon but I don't think he's someone that would supplant Ashby for his role based on Hall's command looking even worse than Ashby's.

Agreed. That's why I mentioned Koenig/Zerpa; they're lefties who have worked late innings & been effective. When he returns, I could see Hall being called on to face a hitter or two to finish up a middle inning & maybe continue depending on matchups.

Chourio ops under 800. Defenders please help us understand in year 3 why no progression.

I’m not exactly going to “defend” Chourio because his hitting has been very frustrating over the last several weeks. It’s been a significant contributor to the offense’s mediocre production over the last 6 weeks.

But I would point out that the performance of players who are breakout stars in their early 20’s does not necessarily follow a steady upward progression.

Julio Rodriguez and Jackson Merrill are two who come right to mind.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

To be fair, his outing today wasn’t exactly leverage. Down 1 in the 6th is the definition of middle relief.

Inheriting first and third with 0 outs in a one run game isn't high leverage but it's still leverage. Leverage index when entering today of 1.15. Anything above 1.00 is above average leverage situation.

Probably a partial share... Maybe 60-40 towards Ashby.

Unless Hall looks drastically different than he did earlier this season, he should not go near high leverage. You can't have a guy pitching leverage with the walk issues that Hall has. His walk issues make Ashby look like Maddux.

The most honest answer that I can give is that he’s 22 years old.

Am I frustrated with the lack of a true breakout… absolutely yes. But very few guys follow a linear progression scale at 22.
