Brewers vs Padres Open Thread: News / Notes / Predictions / Miscellaneous. What's on your Mind?

Three days is short rest, four days is regular rest, and the now typically preferred five days is giving them an extra day, That's how I look at it anyway.

Wouldn't be too surprised if they used Misio out of the pen for an inning or two on what would normally be his throw day between starts, but would be pretty surprised if he started a game on three days rest unless it was some kind of G7 scenario where he was only expected to go four five innings tops.

As of now I believe it would map out as start today. G2, day off, G3 (possible relief window)  G4, day off, start G5 (on five days rest if needed). day off, G1, G2, day off, start G3 (on four days rest), G4, G5, day off, G6, start G7 (on four days rest if needed). day off, day off, day off, G1, start G2 (on four days rest), day off, G3, G4 (possible relief window) G5, day off, start G6 (on five days rest if needed), G7.

If they were to close out the NLCS before G7, could line up the World Series rotation for Misio to start G1, G2, day off, G3, G4, start G5 (on four days rest), day off, G6, then would presumably be available for a couple relief innings on two days rest for G7 if needed.

Just for the heck of it, I looked back at Miz's season.  In 30 starts he was only on four days rest 4 times; he was on 5+ days rest the other 25 times.  At some point his body's going to adjust to 5+ days as being the 'full rest' time period; maybe that's already happened.

We're all used to thinking of 4 days off as full rest; I wonder if we're doing the baseball equivalent of fighting the last war.

Starting to really wonder if there isn't an emerging scenario where Miz opens Game 3 or 4 instead of his regular bullpen.

Going to be important to start with some zeroes early especially once the series shifts to Petco. Then you can go Hall/Drohan and back to May to force them into some substitutions.

He'd still be very much available to start game 5 or game 1 of an NLCS.

I think one of the games (3 or 4) is a Dustin May Robert Gasser piggyback and the other game is pure bullpen game.

I think our regular bullpen arms are capable of putting zeros up on the road.

Maybe. But in light of Miz's comments yesterday. Got me thinking. And wouldn't be a bad strategy. Might as well make every Miz bullet count.

That’s fair,

Let’s assume May and Gasser for game three and we lose.

We throw the kitchen sink at San Diego with game 4 being a bullpen game. We use up Uribe and Megill through eight innings. Would it be wise to throw Miz for the ninth inning with a one run lead to prevent game 5 from ever happening?

With 13 pitchers, many of them good, it seems difficult to imagine messing with Miz on 2-3 days rest.

Assume two wins in Milwaukee first 🙂

How vital is it to purchase parking in advance for the home NLDS games?

If you want to tailgate, then it is a good idea.  If you aren't going to tailgate, head over to Dugout 54, buy a drink, then take the free shuttle.

Mrs. Samurai and I park in that area and walk.  We parked in Doyne Park because we couldn't find parking on the street, though.  Sometimes it is tougher to find street parking over there for a Brewers game than it is for a Badgers game near Camp Randall.

Not important.  You can buy parking at AmFam or pay online after the game.

I was sitting in section 215 last night and my line of sight was literally straight down the 3rd base line.  I had the best angle in the world on Ty France's would-be HR -- better than any TV replay angle -- and it was definitely hooking foul.

It was so obvious to everyone seated near me exactly what happened that we couldn't understand all the delays and confusion.

Just saw game times for game 3(830), 4(900), and 5 if necessary on friday(330).  I hate them all and just another reason to root against the dodgers.

Remember what Yoda said:

Watching the G1 highlights it was clear to me from one of the angles that the ball was going to go foul, as others have said. There was a noticeable change in direction when it hit the wire.

The camera angle from the live broadcast gave plenty of moon shot foul ball vibes

I did a bit of googling and most domed stadiums have very similar ground rules as AmFam Field. The controversy surrounding that play is completely and unequivocally unwarranted. It's not like this came out of nowhere and nobody ever thought about how best to handle these types of plays.

"forcing an All-Star to throw more pitches than he has in a game in three years"

I was wondering how many times he'd thrown 40 this year much less ever.

Yeah, I was skeptical of attempting a 6 out save there. 4 out saves are much more common and even those have a little bit of uncertainty (it's baseball after all). I honestly think Miller did a heck of a job, he got 5 outs and nobody was really squaring him up if they made contact at all. The walks weren't great. Chourio is just that guy.

I think the concept was right that you bring in Miller to face the middle of the order in the 8th and then (in theory) he has the easier bottom of the order to finish it out. But they tied their hands a bit having Morejon pitch a second inning in game 1 and found themselves in the unenviable position having used all of their high-leverage relievers (except Miller) without a W to show for it. It's not a good omen for a deep playoff run to have already made your two best relievers do multiple innings at the beginning of the division series.

I loved the quick hook for Uribe in game 1, it's a move that our deep bullpen allows us to make.

Looking forward, it's ugly for the Padres. We've gotten extended looks at their high leverage arms and they have shown cracks. They have a starting pitching advantage and home field in G3, but we have plenty of arms that we haven't even used yet.

This is certainly the consequence of only carrying 11 pitchers. Sure, you get some flexibility offensively, but the kinds of players you're gaining that flexibility with aren't super likely to be difference makers, at least not in terms of getting the big hit. I think the Padres would be perfectly fine with that trade off, but one of the underrated things coming in is that their high-leverage arms worked A LOT this year. The bullpen had to cover more innings than anyone in baseball. They may well turn it around. But this is the risk you take. If you build to win those close games and don't do it, you're in a situation where your best arms have worked a lot and been seen a lot.

The other big-picture thing I wanted to mention is our playoff road losing streak. On the one hand, it's not good to have lost 11 in a row on the road in the postseason. On the other, to have played that many games in 8 years (with two playoff years where we didn't play any) shows how successful this team has been. I just feel like that streak has to end sometime. Hoping it can be in Game 3. I expect the Padres will come out swinging.
