They're not sleeping, they were just facing arguably the best pitcher in baseball over the last 2 years.

Hendo is going to shove tomorrow and match, if not better, Yammy pitch for pitch. We go up 2-0 and then Bobby Gas puts the Doyers in a bind all day for a 3-0 lead. Dustin May goes full Syndergaard and blows away his old team for the 4-0 sweep and we shock the baseball world.

Now that would be something!

I think A-Rod made an interesting argument in the post game regarding bullpen usage - the issue with using 4 innings of bullpen every game isn’t necessarily the wear and tear of too much use of individual bullpen pitchers, it’s the opponent getting familiar with all of them over a long series. We did use all the A-guys last night. It’s very hard to trust the other guys in the type of high-leverage situations (basically all 9 innings, it seems). We’re going to need the other guys, especially if we can’t get our starter through 6. We do get more off days and that helps, but the familiarity thing does concern me a little.

The Luis Lara slander needs to stop. We don’t win this game without a 21 year old kid coming up with a clutch hit in the NLCS against one of the best pitchers in baseball on the two time defending champions.

It’s not that deep. We don’t win the Padres series if Sal didn’t play. It’s not slander to say Laras bat is highly questionable.

The Dodgers approach seemed to be patient at bats and slap singles. 13 base runners but only one run. 🤔

Not a bad approach against Miz and hard throwers. I’m not aware of any balls meaningfully driven into the outfield yesterday, though.

Sal had a really nice NLDS going 3 for 9. Do we lose two additional games in the NLDS if he isn’t available for it? I think that’s a speculative stretch at the very best.

That’s not what this is about. It’s about one single guy on the team that you trash constantly, (despite the fact that all your other posts are trashing posters for trashing guys), and when you trashed him yet again last night and said there was no reason for him to start, and he comes away with the game winning hit, a 21 year old against Tarik Skubal, do you raise your hand and say “I was wrong. I own it. My bad.”

No. You disappear for the remainder of the thread, and then come back the next day and STILL double down on your hate.

too good defensively for that.

I think Hamilton getting some starts against the righty Dodger starters, with Ortiz coming in toward the later innings as a defensive replacement, is within the realm of possibility.

But yeah, these games have been so tight that one additional defensive miscue could have flipped any single one of them so far.

Trash him constantly? I’ve said many times he is a great defensive player. I don’t think his bat plays long term. It’s not a big deal. Sorry for disappearing from the IGT. I unfortunately had to listen to the rest of it on the radio.

First observation, much fewer Dodger fans in attendance than last year's Game 1.  Last night, didn't see any "Ohtani" fans like I did last year.

Not as loud with the roof open.  Didn't compare to 2018 Game 1.

I thought it was neat gesture to introduce the entire 40-man roster.  Priester, nice to see you again!  Get well soon!  Can't recall Zerpa being introduced.  OK, I didn't know Murph is officially number 00.

And of course I missed the Turang homer, as I was reading the scoreboard.  Did you know Brice's 5.7 WAR was fifth best in MLB?  A neat thing to know!

1) The Brewers obviously do

2) Odd that you’ve never expressed those same bat concerns about Frelick, who certainly isn’t far and away different than Lara offensively

3) He’s 21 years old. How many 21 year old baseball players are all the way developed offensively?

That was tense the whole way through. Massive win, though. If you'd have offered me 1-1 coming out of these two, I'd have taken it. I remember Game 2 in 2018. We had a 3-run lead in the late innings of that one. It's an underrated crushing loss, but no need to think about that right now! We're up 1-0, and it feels like we stole one.

Or does it? We also kind of just won doing what we do. Nobody got the big hit with men on base, but we hit a homer and got a clutch single from Lara. The bullpen shoved. It was enough. Some thoughts:

1) Mis wasn't his best, but he gutted. Really, both of these starts, it's been one long inning that's really hurt him. Tonight, it was the second. His command was off, but he made pitches when he needed to, especially in the third and fourth. Getting that extra out helped. Can't say enough about the work the bullpen did. Double plays also helped a great deal.

2) Ashby is such a weapon so far in the postseason. He is peak Andrew Miller. I hope we can win a game without needing to use him at some point, but at least he's used to the usage. Megill and Uribe were shakier, but they got it done. Uribe's K to end the 6th was huge.

3) The Tucker AB in the ninth was a big question mark for me. Megill gets to 2-2 and then throws three straight curveballs, two of which bounce. Felt like odd timing and pitch-calling there. Especially 3-2, I think you have to go fastball. Trevor just wasn't quite commanding the knuckle curve, and that often leads to trouble. Glad he could Mookie in the park and lock down the win.

4) Turang is the obvious MVP. Home run, great defense, strong ABs the whole way through. I'm not wild about the bunt in the 8th (especially if you're going to let Scott face all those lefties--bold move by Roberts to walk the bases loaded, but I thought it was a smart choice). That part of the order, I think you play for more than one.

5) I thought this was a very well-managed game on both sides. There were gambles (Murphy sticking with Ashby to close the 8th and letting Megill start vs. a lefty in the ninth was his big one), but they seemed justified. I think the move to Uribe for the sixth was very, very smart. You put your best against that part of the order, knowing Ashby is going to go two (and face the top of the order again) so that Megill can go against the bottom part. Incredibly well-managed.

6) Balks. Mis, that play WAS a balk, but Smoltz is right. No way the home plate ump saw it in real time. You'd have to have bionic eyes to see that. Also, no way Mis gained an advantage there. Basically, the umpire guessed and got lucky. You live with that, I guess, but then there was the Bauers play. That looked super borderline. In the NHL, they both would have been penalized or neither, but to have those calls go opposite is weird. Curt Hogg is right. Balks and check swings don't really make sense. I think the "attempt to deceive" standard is the best one to apply to a balk, and I probably would've let both plays go for outs on the bases. The other thing is when the pitcher just freaks out and forgets the situation. If Mis had drastically screwed up his step off, even without an attempt to deceive, I'd still be fine with that as a balk. Dropping the ball while on the mound. Etc. But that little flinch seemed incredibly innocuous. Very glad it didn't become a bigger issue.

7) We chased so many high fastballs, I almost wonder if it was some kind of strategy. Just aggressively locking on to velocity pitches above the belt. Still, you'd like to see guys get a little more discerning, especially at eye level.

8) The Dodgers are going to hurt you if you give up that many baserunners this series. That they didn't tonight is what makes it feel a little theft like. We'll have to clean up the walks especially. I suppose the other side of that is that it seemed like LA focused on a lot on how to handle Mis and didn't necessarily have the same amount of effort or focus in ABs against the relief corp. That'll change as they get through the series, but it's nice to log the W without Mis throwing out his best stuff.

9) The recipe for winning this series is getting 2-3 at home and 1-2 on the road. Going up 2-0 would be massive, but I won't panic at 1-1. Have a feeling Henderson throws very well today, though.

What a win. May we have 3 more in us.

The only reason the Brewers keep winning one-run games is because they aren't playing well-enough to win by more runs. There haven't been a ton of pitching performances that have looked great. Their defense (before last night), has been shaky. The bats hit some hard balls against the Padres, but also looked lost at times last night, swinging out of the zone, taking 2-strike pitches down the middle.

There's nowhere to go but up if they play up to their own standard.

I thought Turang swinging the bat well and having good at-bats against Skubal was one of the most encouraging things about last night. He’s always been very streaky and so far has not usually been much of a playoff bat. If he got hot that could be a huge X factor for us.

I've been thinking the same thing. The LOB, RISP, can't get much worse. They weren't even playing their brand of defense against SD. Last night was the first game where it felt like the structure of their defense really and truly won them a game that easily flips with weaker parts in the field. One damn game that they can blow up like 6-1 and get some lower leverage arms going, would be fantastic. Tonight would be perfect.

Just not true. I’ve said many times that right field is the black hole of the team offensively and that includes Sal.

Okay. Well my points 1 and 3 still stand, and as for last night, someone on our playoff roster needs to play right field against Skubal.

What did you guys think of the balk? I was at the game and Dodgers guy that picked off Bauers his move looked more like a balk to me than Miz. Kind of a BS call that could of really went against us.

Yes can we please win by more than 5 runs and the bats just go off? We are winning, but we are FAR from playing what we are capable of yet.

Really disappointing that National media is shocked Misiorowski is not dominating & going 7+, insinuating possibly his freakish ability can't b sustainable over a season & time, and treating his 2 outings as a  disappointment and not what a true ace does, but purposely not mentioning he is only 24yrs old, only a year and a half of mlb service and has pitched 240+ innings in last 14 months, which is the total amount of innings he pitched in prior 5 years(2021-2025) combined, from start of Crowley college career through his mlb call up last year .National media is irresponsibly not noting he obviously is naturally fatigued and in uncharted water. The frustration for me is the lack of this stat not being mentioned in a world were they flood there coverage with every obscure stat known to man..Also haven't heard a mention of the Brewers 4 wins, t.Megill has a win & 3saves,,literally an unbelievable postseason so far,and in rare waters (D.L.Hall 2-0,Ashby 1-0),and they also act like Misiorowsk's pitching will b difference maker in Brewers postseason success forgetting the Brewers as a team won 87 games if u don't included Misiorowski's 16 dubs

Murph is pressing a lot of the right buttons this postseason. It helps when your bullpen is rock solid and your batters are scoring all of the runners from 3B with less than 2 outs. The Turang bunt was the first time this postseason that he made a move where I was like "I'm not too sure about this". It was clearly all designed to get Vaughn an AB against a lefty but Roberts made the right counter to play the numbers.

I know we talk a lot about how this Brewers team is battle tested in the postseason and I think the same needs to be said for Murph and has ability to manage on an even footing with Roberts.

Yeah, I think Roberts' approach was "whether they get 1 run or 4, it's all the same." Murph maybe wasn't counting on that. Obviously, he would've taken the 1 add-on score. It's hard to anticipate that 4 or 5 batters later, so I'm not too upset about that part. I do think you had to assume an IBB to Contreras, and with slow runners up you're allowing a potential inning-ending double play in a way that allows Scott to avoid righties entirely too.

It was the wrong call, I think, but a close one. And it worked out fine in the end. I'd also think differently if Turang were running at his peak because at least then you force a tough play. He struggled to beat out a Hernandez bobble earlier that I think is a hit if he's healthy.
