Brewers to open, end 2008 against Cubs

Imagine if the Brewers and Cubs had played each other on the final weekend of the 2007 season. Instead of being eliminated on Friday night in a loss vs. San Diego while Chicago was beating the injury-depleted Reds, the Brewers could have gone head-to-head with the Cubs for the NL Central crown.

Well, Brewers fans, you just might get that chance in 2008. The Brewers announced their schedule for next season today and not only are the Brewers opening the season in Chicago, they are ending it at home against the Cubs.

So, if the Brewers and Cubs fight it out again until the final weekend, they can settle business against each other. And in Milwaukee!

The only bummer is that for the second consecutive season the Brewers go to Wrigley three times while the Cubs come to Miller Park only twice. Other than the season-ending series, Chicago plays a four-game series in Milwaukee from July 28-31.

Beyond the opening series in Chicago, the Brewers go to Wrigley for three games on April 29-30 and May 1 -- pretty soon to be going back there -- as well as three games from Sept. 16-18. At least the NL Central rivals will play each other twice in the final month, as opposed to no games this year.

After opening the season in Chicago, the Brewers will return to Milwaukee for their home opener on Friday, April 4 (1 p.m.) against San Francisco, sans Barry Bonds. After three against the Giants, the Brewers play three against Cincinnati to complete their first home stand. Then, it's off on a monster trip to New York, St. Louis and Cincinnati.

Other than the usual home-and-home series with Minnesota, the Brewers' "natural rival," they are matched up against the powerful AL East in interleague play. No Yankees games, though. The Brewers go to Boston for three games from May 16-18 and to Minnesota from June 27-29.

All of the Brewers' interleague home games will be played on the same home stand from June 13-22. They will play Minnesota for three games, Toronto for three and Baltimore for three.

One quirk on the schedule has the Brewers making two trips to Atlanta, an NL East team, on June 23-25 and Aug. 1-3. Teams don't normally play two road series against teams not in their division but interleague play creates such quirks.

The Brewers have four three-city trips and the same number of three-team home stands. They have two 10-game home stands -- from July 4-13 (Pittsburgh, 3; Colorado, 4; Cincinnati, 3) and Sept. 1-10 (New York Mets, 3; San Diego, 4; Cincinnati , 3).

Except for trying to accommodate a handful of requests from each team, schedules basically are random. Of course, that randomness can also lead to some goofiness.

I think the one thing in particular that the Brewers request is not to open against the Cubs in Milwaukee. They weren't too happy when they had to do that a few years ago.

As far as opening vs. the Cubs at Wrigley and closing vs. the Cubs at Miller Park, whether it's random or by design, I think it's great for fan interest.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Shouldn't that be "regular-season-ending series"? http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif

Seriously, I can think of happier ways to send off the (regular) baseball season than to have cubs fans in my face for the last weekend, even if the Brewers were winning by then.

I guess we will have to hope, again, for more ticket purchases by Brewers fans, for Brewers fans.

I thought Boston came to MP. I think half of us posters were at the Clock Giveaway Night when the Brewers blew a lead late in the game.

So by my quick count the Brewers have 9 road games vs. the Cubs and 7 home games vs the Cubs. How do they end up with more road vs. home for the second year in a row?

Stuff like this has happened before. It appears to be something that MLB tries to even out over time, but they don't necessarily try to equalize things the very next season.

I would like to see them do something to prevent people from Illinois from getting tickets to the final series vs. the Cubs, otherwise it could look really bad if we are in a pennant race and 1/2 of Miller Park is cheering for the Cubs.

I noticed the Cardinal games are not designated as marquee games. Probably because they figure Cardinal nation is a little down after this season. Those opening games in Chicago might be a little cold. Anyone think Sheets' next injury involves frostbite?

I was looking forward to attending the last games of the year next year. Now I will avoid them at all costs.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.
