Ben Sheets is no longer a loser

Well it took a few years, and the Brewers getting better, but Ben Sheets is no longer technically a loser. I don't think much of looking at W/L records of pitchers, but I know some people do. At least now, even using a W/L record, nobody can call Ben a loser.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I still think its amazing that during Sheets's 2004 season that he 12-14. With basically any run support he is the Cy Young that year

I just had the mental image of Ben Sheets as a hitting instructor.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Today watching the game I was trying to imagine his smack-talk when he got back to the dugout after his rbi sac-bunt.

If he was a real winner, he wouldn't have let Gagne blow the save on Opening Day and he'd be 3-0.

Seriously, though, I'm glad Benny's finally a "winner". If he stays healthy, he's on track for a very special season.

RS = run support = runs offense scored per 9 IP while starter was the pitcher of record.

Crazy how that works.

I have been waiting to start this thread since May of last year. I hope you all realize I have probably jinxed Sheets again this year by starting this thread. I say again because I posted something joking about Sheets getting hurt last year just hours before he got hurt.

what if he loses his next 2 starts? then he is back to his loser ways and can't be counted on ever again.

Ah, unless he wins the two after that, then he's a winner again!

Brittle Ben has made it through week 2 of the season, lets hope we can say he is still healthy come the end of Sept. If that happens the Brewers should be playing in the playoffs.

This means absolutely nothing, in the big picture, I know. But I drafted Ben Sheets on the 7th round of my fantasy league draft, amid peels of scorn and ridicule from my league members. Of course, I already had Brandon Webb, to hedge my bets, but I have believed all along that this will be the season Ben finally gets some run support, and wins in the high teens, maybe 20 if things break right.

Why?

Because this is his contract "walk year." Not saying for a second that Ben wasn't trying as hard, or tanking it in past years, but with the Brewers history, THIS will be the season he finally experiences some GOOD luck, both in terms of injuries, defensive and offensive support....then of course he'll expect $15,000,000 a year, and Doug won't retain him, as the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox or Tigers swoop in and sign him.

However, that will be OK. Because I predict this one year of good fortune won't last. The injury bug will return in 2009, and 2010...rendering him an expensive part of some rich team's DL, like Pedro Martinez.

That's why I won't have as much of a problem with trading him away at the deadline if we're foundering by July 30th or so. I DID have a problem whenever we sent our cleanup men packin' all these years, because they were always healthy and productive, nearly 120-162 games a year.

But honestly, I have to admit that I just don't think Ben's a lucky guy. And if we did all we could to keep him, at the expense of having enough money to retain say, a Ryan Braun or a Hart or a Hardy or Weeks, it could come back to haunt us, as it did when we kept Cal Eldred, Jaime Navarro, Jeff D'Amico and Teddy Higuera. For whatever reason, the Brewers just don't have good luck when they retain homegrown pitchers, in long term contracts. Perhaps it's how the farm system handled their delicate arms from the Rookie League on up, but it's a Brewer curse.

Again, it's not a knock on Ben personally. He's just unlucky, and so are we, when it comes to pitchers...

"So if this fruit's a Brewer's fan, his ass gotta be from Wisconsin...(or Chicago)."

If all Ben wanted was $15 mil/year, I would personally be surprised if the Brewers didn't offer it (up to a certain point anyway, I don't see the Brewers offering him 6 years).
