The CC Watch... Latest: Who knows?

Posted
I was thinking along the line of Rulz...some shorter deal that is around $33-million per, over 3 or 4 years. CC gets paid, but also gets to be a FA again still near his peak years.

My guess is he goes for 7/200, or something very close to it.

The Yankees have a huge amount of salary coming off (Giambi $21m, Abreu $16m, Pettitte $16m, IRod $6m or so, Mussina $11m, Pavano $11m) and are moving into a new stadium.

The Yankees also have a crazy new owner who's desperate to step out from his father's shadow and make a big splash. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Sheets, CC and Manny all end up wearing pintstripes.

If they tied up a ton of money in those three players, it wouldn't surprise me if they were near the bottom of their division in three years.

There are limits to how many Type A and B free agent you can sign in one year.

Per Cot's

Limits on free agent signings

* If 0-14 players file for free agency under Article XX (B) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, no team may sign more than 1 Type A or B player.

* If 15-38 players file for free agency, no team may sign more than 2.

* If 39-62 players file for free agency, no team may sign more than 3, with the limits increasing accordingly for higher totals.

* A club may sign an unlimited number of free agents who do not qualify as Type A or B free agents.

* A club may sign as many type A and B free agents as it has lost, regardless of the limits above.

I had never heard of the limit on signing FA until recently. Has that ever been in play where those rules were the reason that a team couldn't sign a FA? I don't recall it.

Edit: I had thought this would be an issue with the Yankees this year, but maybe not. They will target Texeira and two SP, so that should fill their biggest holes. I guess they can sign C level FA or make trades if they feel the need to fill other positions.

Yeah I am not sure if it will affect them. I just wanted to let people know that there are limits so even the Yankees with their apparent limitless payroll are limited.

Not sure if anyone else checked out Rob Neyer's chat during game 7 of the ALCS but someone asked him his opinion on the Brewers chances of signing CC. His response was to reference some bank robber and to say that the Brewers will not sign CC. He said that CC will consider the offer for a few seconds and then sign else where. That the offer from the team would be just to save face with the fans. I think it's time we all start accepting that he won't be back.

However, you could argue the Twins made a major mistake in trading Santana last year. They got a mediocre package, and would have been much better off having Santana pitch for them this year. Heck, they probably would've beaten the Sox by 3-5 games.

This is a good point. I often wonder if Cleveland should have hung onto CC because of the added value of the picks viz. the Brewer's package and the upturn of the tribe in the second half of the season.

There's no reason to accept it until it happens. I'm guessing Neyer knows less about this than any of us here. He is supposed to cover 30 teams, he isn't likely to have any special insight on this issue.

I don't think anybody expects CC to come back. But there's a chance and for some of us it's fun to remain hopeful.

this was in mlbtraderumors.com.

Basically saying that CC is seriously considering staying in Milwaukee, that he liked it that much.

The timing of news regarding Fielder being shopped sort of lends credence to this report. They'll have to drop salary somewhere and if they have to keep Cameron to get CC to sign it makes for few options. The Yankees coming out and saying they were interested in Cameron too might have more to do with Sabathia than with Cameron and actually might indicate they think Cameron might hold the CC key. I've lobbied against bringing back Cameron, but his value goes way up if it brings them Sabathia.

I would love Sabathia at 4 years for $25mm a year. But what's to stop the Yankees from giving him a 6 year deal at $25mm per? It's one thing to like Milwaukee and not want to play in New York, but $50mm is a ton of cash to turn down.

I still think CC will be in Dodger blue next season. The Dodgers have a huge chunk of payroll coming off the books, their core is a group of similarly-aged & still cheap young guys, and they have money to throw around anyway, being an LA team. Of course being the closest plausible destination to Sabathia's hometown doesn't hurt either...

He isn't turning down $50M though really. There is a chance he stays healthy and productive for 4 years and he is actually hurting himself significantly by taking that $50M. There is a chance he has minor injuries and is mostly productive and he is only turning down like $10M. There is a chance he completely blows out his arm and he loses $50M. He has to weigh those chances against each other and against his happiness and make his decision.

Also if the yankees come back with a 6 year $25M he could easily ask to have a 5th year added with buyout or something and the Brewers might do that.

Now if someone goes out and offers like $30M a year or something we really stand no chance.

I'm starting to get the feeling (no sources or anything like that) that CC will be a Brewer next year. The only problem I have with going after CC is that they'll ignore Ben, which means they better seal the deal with CC. Sheets has seemed upset that he wasn't offered an extension before the season and I can't believe going after CC hard now and more or less ignoring Sheets will sit well. This might sound crazy -- but mark me down for CC staying with Milwaukee next year and I do think 4 years at 100 million gets it done (there might be an option or something like that). Losing a Gagne and Sheets salary allows the Brewers to make this deal. I just worry more about improving the other parts of the team since free agency doesn't seem ideal for the Crew if CC is back, but CC, Yo, Parra, Bush, and Suppan (he'll start there's no way around it) makes for a pretty strong rotation IMO.

I have to agree with JJHardy 7.

2 months ago I didn't think there was a prayer that we would sign C.C. long term.

However looking back at Melvin's and Attanasio's track record, they like to spend money on veterans. And not always wisely. When they signed Suppan I never though it would happen. I never thought the Gagne, Cameron or Kendall Signings would happen either. The Mota trade seemed kind of wild also.

What am I trying to say? Basically I have seen Melvin and Attanasio throw more good money than needed at mediocre players in the past. It wouldn't suprise me anymore if they decided to make a big fair market offer to one of the best pitchers in baseball.

I'd like 4/100 but I'd personally be surprised if he took it. Like others have said, he'd be leaving at least 40 mil on the table by doing that.
