Scooter Gennett's trade value

I'm listening to Mike Heller's radio program on 1070 am and Craig Coshun is on talking about all the changes with the Brewers over the past few days. When they came to the subject of Villar and is he the 3B of the future, CC said he believes he's more than likely the 2B of the future....depending on what happens with Scooter in the offseason. Wondering what people think a fair return would be for Scooter, assuming he continues his solid season as is.

I am guessing a deal headlined by a teams 6-10 ranked prospect with 1-2 boring lottery tickets is the mid point. Maybe more if a teams scouts believe in his improvement vs. LHP this year.

I'd love to move on from Scooter and place Arcia-Villar up the middle. Scooter has been more than anyone couldve hoped but he just doesn't play very good defense.

It's pretty simple - if teams think he can hit lefties, they're dealing for their next second baseman - if they think he cannot hit lefties, they're dealing for a platoon guy with no positional versatility.

 

Root hard for Plan A - Plan B won't bring much.

Scooter's #1 comp through age 25 is actually Neil Walker, and Walker was traded for Jon Niese

 

I would say that is the general range you would get for Scooter. Better than Rijo/Wilkerson, not as good as Niese

Gennett to the Braves for Mike Soroka or Luke Dykstra. I think that is a fair price for Gennett.

 

Soroka is a #3 at best starter probably more along the lines of a back end starter. Soroka doesn't walk many and he has been striking out batters at a decent rate. Soroka kind of reminds me of Fiers and Gallardo. Soroka knows how to pitch and he can get guys out that way and he is very accurate with his pitches.

 

Dykstra is a wildcard he can hit which is his only tool offensively. Not much power in his bat though he will hit for a lot of doubles think Overbay at 2B. He does have an advanced understanding of the game and won't make outs on the bases but he won't steal many bases either. Defensively Dykstra is above average at 2B if he was more athletic he would be an excellent 2B but then again he would be playing SS if that were the case. His arm is about average for a 2B and would be below average at SS or 3B.

With his control you should be able to get a couple 50 grade prospects and a lottery ticket or two. I'm probably selling him short TBH.

The chances of that are very slim. He has value especially if he can repeat his success against lefties in 2017.

That being said, why do you want to hold onto the lesser talent/ player with lesser value??

Neil Walker has averaged 2.8 WAR over the last 5 seasons and never less than 2.4 WAR. Scooter has been worth 2.0, 1.7, 0.2, and so far 0.6 WAR from 2013-2016. Their values don't compare.

 

Which team is really going to pay for the upgrade that Scooter represents? The Brewers would do well to get one of the 3 players the got for Lind if they moved Scooter, IMO. I don't see a team looking at Scooter as a first division regular or any kind of longterm solution in the same way I don't. He isnt a useful bench bat to a contender as he offers little versatility. The best is to find a team that is struck by injuries or underperformance at the position.

I agree with this. Scooter is a classic second division starter. I'd love a return like we got for Lind. I would like to deal him, and I don't see him as deeply coveted. You may find a team that wants a stopgap and work a deal. Perhaps some team will want to balance their lineup with a lefty. Scooter is a nice player but rather stiff in a day when you have athletes up the middle everywhere. He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer but a steady hitter.

 

MLB trade rumors site went over the second base trade market and indicated there was not much demand. Maybe it will improve in the offseason but like I said, I don't see Scooter as being highly coveted.

I don't think they get much more than what they got for Hill. So they keep him until his pricetag is more than what willing to pay, then ship him off for what they can get. So I assume they keep him for 2017, and the first year arby price. Not sure about after that though.

Gennett is the greater talent. Villar's career OPS is .717. Gennett's is .743. Villar strikes out a ton for a guy with minimal power. Scooter has more power and has hit for a higher average over a longer sample. Even Villar's strength, stealing bases, is completely offset by the times he gets thrown out on the bases.

 

I don't get the knock on Scooter's defense either. He is solid defensively. Villar on the other hand is not a good defensive SS despite all the boosting by Schroeder. He was on pace for 25-30 errors at shortstop and had a pedestrian .964 FP. That's a lot of errors in this era when so many outs come via the strikeout.

Villar is clearly the superior player especially if you put him at the easier position in 2B. Sure he's more raw and needs to be coached up on fundamentals still but plenty of time to clean those issues up at his age. With plenty of team control left I don't see the need to trade him anytime soon.

 

Scooter is what he is right now and no room to improve really, and that's just a mediocre player that has almost no trade value to the league. Let him keep playing until another young guy is beating down the door for PT on the infield as he is competent. Then trade him for whatever lower level lotto tickets you can get since he can't be used in a utility role really at all.

With Perez and Orf around for additional immediate middle IF support, I'd deal Scooter as soon as possible. I'm not expecting much, but I think either of the other two make for a better roster. I'd be happy to flip him for one other moderate prospect. Perhaps someone will have an injury and he'll make it through waivers in August.

2B is still a weak position across baseball, so this offseason I could see KC and a few other teams being interested in him- obviously for a modest return

That's what I'm thinking. Just hard to see a team willing to trade for him. Probably best chance is if he's a secondary piece along with Braun, Nelson, Guerra, etc. Evan if teams buy his splits vs LHP, just not a big market for avg 2B.

 

Aaron Hill comp isn't really valid, because he can play more than one position. Scooter is strictly 2B, and below avg defense there. But I agree with others, if they can move him for a Lind type deal, that would be great.

He's got a 110 OPS+ against RHP in his career. He's an above average hitter against righties and you face righties 75+% of the time. Yes, he's a platoon guy but he hits the side of the platoon you see most often and hits them pretty well for his position. He has value.

According to Fangraphs, Scooter is the 19th best 2B in MLB right now in WAR, 18th best in wRC+, 16th in SLG, 15th in OBP, among qualified players.

 

If you put the minimum plate appearances at 100, he's only ranked 29th in WAR

that's kind of surprising that fangraphs has him rated that low, but looking at his stats it kind of makes sense. I would love to move him for basically anything this off season, but I think a non-tender is more than likely. Maybe Stearns can get Arizona on the phone again.
