Kevin Gausman

Posted

I posted this in the Schoop thread, but this could be why the Brewers would be interested in Gausman or any other Baltimore pitcher...

From Paul Imig on Twitter July 7th...

If the Brewers had the Phillies defense, Milwaukee’s 3.54 ERA (4th-best in MLB) would be a 5.42 ERA (which would be the worst in MLB). Defense matters. Also, pitchers should WANT to be with the Brewers. What would Arrieta’s ERA be if he was in Milwaukee and not Philly?

From Jerry Crasnick on Twitter July 7th...

Through Friday, the #Phillies rank last in #MLB with minus-77 Defensive Runs Saved, according to Baseball Info Solutions. The #Orioles are a minus-71. The #Brewers (+87) and #Dbacks (+79) rank 1-2.

The Orioles defense is almost as bad as Philadelphia's. I know many see the high errors and don't think the Brewers defense is all that great, but the outfield range and range of Arcia at SS really turns a lot of hits into outs. Gausman or any other Baltimore pitcher could dramatically benefit from having this defense behind them.

Might as well move the whole Gausman discussion over here as well:

His FIP is actually HIGHER than his ERA, though. Between than and park factor adjustments, he just looks like a guy to me.

We'll soon find out. If Stearns goes and gets this guy (or say Bundy), I think the defensive runs saved gap between the Brewers and Orioles is exactly what they're looking at.

It's an interesting and fair theory. Regardless, he could be useful for us an is under control during his prime years.

It all depends on cost, IMO.

The lack of respect that the rest of the league has for Orioles pitching development, progression and maintenance comes in to play here. I think that would be something that is very hard to quantify but very real.

From Adam McCalvy on Twitter...

I asked former O's teammate Wade Miley about Kevin Gausman, a trade target of the Brewers per @Ken_Rosenthal.

"No. 1 s--t," Miley said.

Me: Can I change that to "stuff?"

Miley: "No, leave it as s--t. It's really good s--t."

I like the idea of putting this guy together with Derek Johnson and teaming that with a defense that gets to many more batted balls than he's been pitching with. This could be one of those huge upside acquisitions.

Yep, go from atrocious pitching program and terrible defense to a borderline magician pitching coach with a defense on the exact opposite end of the defensive spectrum. Could be a major swing in this guy's numbers.

Heck, with Schoop hitting in July like he did in 2017 when he put up .293 avg, 32 HR, 105 RBI, .841 OPS, 5.1 WAR, I'm gonna go ahead and just proclaim, get Gausman and Schoop and call it a day.

This kinda feels like it's gonna happen. And soon.

I’d be shopping Stokes, Ortiz, Santana and Supak around the league. That’s two pitchers and two OF. Let’s see what those guys can get you.

I would not engage any discussion about Hiura, Ray, Zach Brown, and anybody with time before 40 man issues pop up.

I’d actually like to see them keep Phillips. He’s the perfect number 4 OF.

More from McCalvy...

Miley relented and said "stuff" will do. Then he said, "I think he got rushed over there a little bit, but I think he could be a true No. 1 somewhere."

Touches on the "stuff" Gausman possesses and alludes to the development issues Baltimore has which amt2138 mentioned earlier.

The Machado talks supposedly centered on Ortiz and Phillips as a starting point and the Brewers were reportedly the runner-up offer so it would indicate Baltimore likes those two. Maybe Ortiz and Phillips nets Gausman and Schoop.

Gausman, yes please. He has 2.5 years of team control left and just screams a chance of scenery guy.

Get him out of Baltimore and he could really impress.

A Gausman/Schoop combo is going to be pretty expensive because neither are strict rentals. Shoop would be controlled for 1+ season and Gausman for 2+. I kind of question whether it would be both just based on the economics. Their combined salary for next year would likely run around 18 million, which probably would put the Brewers at about 108 million without making any other moves.

Probably would come down to package A with fewer prospect capital for both and their money owed or package B with more prospect capital in exchange for $$$ coming back from the O's.

I'm down. I wish Schoop batted left handed but I'm down.

If he were about to be traded he wouldn't be in the game right now.

Well if we do get Gausman we will see how much advanced stats tell a story.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I love that we are to the point where we can consider the Brewers a pitching safe haven where a mismanaged young hurler can come to be developed properly while pitching in front of an exceptional defense. That concept three years ago would have been incredible far fetched to the point of being laughable. Now it is at least considered a plausible narrative.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Phillips wasn't taken out because he was never in.

I saw the report about Phillips being a healthy scratch but can’t find it from an actual source.

Rosenthal tweeted it, check out the Mous thread.

He and Shoop will be far more expensive than the proposed Machado deal.

Why?

Schoop is going to be about a 1.5 WAR player (being generous here) and Gausman is about a 2.3 WAR player. It maybe a little bit more expensive but not far more expensive. You are looking at Ray and Ortiz plus a lottery ticket instead of Phillips and Ortiz plus a lottery ticket. I wouldn't call that far more expensive.
