2019 NFL miscellaneous news

Yah, the reaction among people/players is really bad. With how sensitive the NFL is to public opinion I somewhat expect a season ending suspension. They will look like valiant heroes for taking him out. We are already so far into the season the 4-6 minimum you would expect is close enough to the end of the year you may as well just drop the hammer.

At the same time Burfict gave quite a few serious brain injuries to people before they gave him that treatment. Different context as it was during the game, but intention was the same.

They’ll give Garrett a 6 game suspension, he’ll appeal it down to 4 and then people will outraged (rightfully) that the length of the suspension is equivalent to a drug violation.

Yep, call me cynical but I don't see the NFL actually giving a season ending suspension for a fight. They are too afraid of setting a precedent and then looking bad when they don't hand it down on one of their star QB's or an equivalent player. I can only remember Suh stomping on a packer and Charles Martin, had anyone ever really been suspended long term for a fight or cheap shot?

This goes beyond a fight or a cheap shot. Swinging a helmet at a dude's exposed head is unprecedented. The Browns can head this off by just suspending him right away and not waiting for the league to do it. The league can deal with Pouncey et al.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

This is far beyond the stomp or a normal cheap shot late spear tackle. You could legitimately kill a person hitting them in the head with a helmet like that. I don't see any way there is less than he's out for the year. His teammates are distancing themselves from him in every interview.

Myles Garrett used to be on the minor league hockey circuit. Took his skate off once and tried to stab a guy.

All kidding aside. This is absurd. Guy swung a weapon at his exposed head. I really couldn't care less if Rudolph did try to take Garrett's helmet off. Garrett DID take Rudolph's off and then clubbed him with it.

I guess I don't see it as that much different than repeated haymakers to an exposed head, you can kill someone doing that too. There have been plenty of viscous brawls in sports. Go check out the Minnesota- Ohio State basketball game in the 70's. Guys got kicked out of school for that but even back then there was controversy that Dave Winfield got off easy. Don't get me wrong, I think he should be at least out for the season, I just think the NFL will find a way to make it 6 reduced to 4. We will see, I did hear on the radio that there was a Miami player swinging his helmet around against FSU a few years ago.

I do see it as different than punching. The same way that I think fist fighting with a dude in the street and hitting him in the head with a baseball bat are different. This is closer to the latter. Suspension is what I expected. Pouncey's is probably appealed down to 1 game. Garrett should take it and sit down.

IF it gets reduced, it will be 2 games out. That way he misses rematch with Cleveland (in Pitts) on 11/24...

That game will be interesting to watch..

Doubt the refs allow ANY latitude.. Fans interaction at field will be interesting as well...

Anyone want to guess O/U on number of flags in that game??? It might be around 35...

Rudolph gets hit in the head and immediately looks to the ref for a flag. Not exactly the reaction one would expect.

Also, Rudolph's agent said they are considering pressing charges. I get it, but that seems like a dangerous precedent to set that I'm sure both the NFL and the NFLPA want no part of.

Yeah, that's never going to happen. Rudolph would give himself just about the worst reputation possible around the league. Regardless of how much they criticize what happened in the press, that is driving in the fast lane toward the least amount of respect possible.

Before he even swung the helmet or ripped it off, Garrett yanked Rudolph up off the ground by his facemask. Could have had a serious neck injury just from that.

Mason Rudolph is already having a shaky start to his career...he isn’t good enough to start such a thing. He would end up like Colin Kaepernick real quick.

Even if not that would be a slippery slope.

Not to mention that Maurkice Pouncey clearly kicked Garrett in the head when he was on the ground. Helmet or no helmet, that can easily result in an aggravated battery charge which is a second degree felony.

Since there was no injury it's unlikely that the charge would be that serious, but the same would apply to Garrett not injuring Rudolph.

Have to admit that why stuff like this shocks the world is still a mystery to me. These guys are trained from about the age of 8 to try and beat the snot out of each other. By now most of them have a good, solid 15+ year history of getting hit in the head repeatedly. The NFL can hand out suspensions and sport fans can spew all the outrage they want, but I've just come to accept that when society combines testosterone and jelly brains together that there will normally be one or two of these blow-up situations that happen every year. I don't think this is why I've stopped watching the NFL (I've watched about 4 of the Packer games so far this year and that is it), but maybe it's played a subconscious role?

Meanwhile, Robert Kraft has received zero disciplinary action for his role in supporting human trafficking.

This rumor has gotten way too much in the way of legs. I hate the Patriots with the best of them, but that's an extreme accusation to make if there isn't the evidence to back it up.

Thanks for that article. I was under the impression the charges were dropped because the evidence was gathered incorrectly. However, it seems like the warrant was obtained on false pretenses. Likely an overzealous police department or DA. I’m not one to call for heads to roll, but I hope someone loses their job for dragging these people through the mud. I really don’t care what happens between consenting adults, provided both parties are truly consenting.

No problem! Don't get me wrong, Kraft is still most likely a dirty old man. But I agree, as long as everyone is truly there under their own free will, what do I care.
