Report: Rodgers wants new contract (Update: May not want to return in 2021)

All reports seem to suggest that this is just a made up rumor.

Likely stirred up by a conference rival trying to induce chaos on draft night.

If the Packers were to trade Aaron Rodgers before June 1 it would actually cost the team MORE in cap space than if he remained on the team.

$37,202,000 to play in Green Bay

$38,356,000 to be traded away

I really think Ken is wrong on that. He’s using the cut number, not the trade.

My thoughts too.

Trade Love, give Rodgers an extension, and draft a receiver in the first round. Do what you need to do to fix this and get Rodgers and the Packers on the same page.

This seems like a terrible way for the Packers to operate.

Not as terrible as this time last year.

Maybe it is just that my patience for unneeded drama is getting less and less as I get older, but I'm fine if they deal him. Also, he made me reference "Ethan Frome" today. He deserves to be shipped to the Jets for that alone.

"The teams Rodgers would like to be traded to include not just the 49ers, but also the Raiders and Broncos. Rodgers would love to move closer to the West Coast, where he grew up, where his fiancée Shailene Woodley lives and where he would have more television opportunities, including the possibility of hosting Jeopardy."

1) Florio has basically zero credibility on this issue as far as I’m concerned. His entire schtick is tabloid sensationalism. Oh, and he’s a Vikings fan, so it’s all motivated reasoning.

2) If any of that is true, why should Gute give a singular rodent’s posterior about Rodgers’ television career? IF he gets dealt, it’ll be to the team that gives the best return. California won’t be underwater for another few decades, at least, so Rodgers can wait a couple more years.

I would have thought that if the Packers had any doubts about the Love selection they would have gone out of their way to extend/renegotiate Rodgers this offseason. We'll see tonight if they move Love as part of a move-up in the draft scenario. I really think they are committed to ending the Rodgers tenure after 2021.

Now the smoke is all about a trade w the Broncos

I think it’s only fitting that Jordan Love is the next host of Jeopardy.

Well played Peavey

Wish I could take credit, but I saw it on twitter.

Lots of chatter about Denver....

If its all media fantasy, then Rodgers should have come out with a definitive response by now. Even a simple tweet.

I've said since the draft last year I think this is all about length of contract extension. Rodgers likely wanted it structured so the cap allowed him to play out his career, Packers likely wanted to commit for 3 or 4 years.

If I'm right, neither side is really wrong. But if Rodgers is unhappy, he needs to be a big boy and realize he needs to play one more year in GB with a smile on his face, then he can be traded wherever he wants.

If it is Denver, you'd have to assume #9, #40, and ??

If Stafford got multiple firsts +, you'd have to think the price for Rodgers is three +?

Well the #3 pick has at least a 2 1st router value. I heard that some local radio sports guy saying it won’t happen until after June 1st for cap reasons but packers will draft as if he is gone. Sounds like someone piling on but I am thinking he is likely gone. Too much smoke...

It's much easier for them to do it after June 1, but how could they possibly defer a return until next year?

Maybe they pick up a young player like Bosa and a bunch of future picks?

If it’s over for 12 in GB, I see it like this...

12>4 by a little

Yet, 4 was more fun to watch.... maybe more than anyone, actually, in any sport.

So if Rodgers decides not to show up and do the Jeopardy gig.. does his cap number still count going forward? (Could the Packers list him as retired or would Arod have to file it and if he doesn't, does the screw over the Packers and make the eat the Cap number or force them to cut him so he could sign with whoever he wants?)

I wish they'd drop the "He wants to be on the West Coast!" thing. It just sounds made up, and like it matters. Being an NFL player is a full time+ job during the season. He's not going to tape Jeopardy after practice. They say it as if he has to go home and shovel his driveway in GB or something.

Rodgers hasn't shot this down though, so there's definitely some fire here somewhere. What's also interesting is what happens to the team if he goes back in the fall? The rest of the guys really going to rally around a dude who doesn't wanna be there?

For those that know the cap rules. The Packers can do changes to Rodgers contract without his approval. What would they gain if they adjusted his contract then traded him after June 1? Anything more than the June 1 savings?

I think they can restructure, without adding years without his approval. I've been trying to figure out if they can do a frantic restructure prior to a trade today, but I truly don't know.
