Brewers trade Feyereisen, Rasmussen to Rays for SS Willy Adames, RHP Trevor Richards

What is the outlook now for Adames and Urias? Can't imagine the Brewers gave up two of their better relievers this season for a bench piece?

Wow..

When I suggested Tampa/ Cleveland as possible trade partners for the Brewers I did not expect a deal this fast.

Tampa becomes the 4th org for JP (CLE/ Yanks/ MKE)

Have to think Wander Franco is getting the call to the show sooner than later..

I would be much happier with this deal if Adames could hit lefties and they would play both Urias and Adames but Adames appears to have reverse splits.

While Rasmussen has been pretty bad for us, he has a high ceiling arm. He needs to work in the pitching lab to create fastball movement and find a 2nd pitch. Kind of feel like we gave him away for nothing.

Adames has a 103 wRC+ for his career (Can compare to Arcia's 71 and Urias 78) and is a good defender, so I don't really understand the comments about it not being an upgrade offensively. Freeing up Urias to play some 3B (and Shaw to play some 1B) makes the team better too. So overall I see the benefits.

What I'm less happy about though is that while offense is offense regardless of how it comes about, adding another strikeout prone player (~30% for his career) might not be what we need. I'm generally in favor of getting controllable (Free agent after 2024) position players for relievers so I don't mind too much, but I would've liked to see Rasmussen stay. Kind of feels a bit rushed to make this trade now, but at the same time I had also been wanting to see something done so guess I can't complain when it does happen.

Seen a bunch of comments saying Adames is basically their Arcia, clubhouse-wise, so that's good at least.

For their careers Adames has been better against RHPs and Urias has been much better against LHPs, so wouldn’t that be perfect for platooning?

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Adames has a .293/.364/.500 triple slash away from the Trop and it cost us a position we tend to replace well. I'm not worried about losing two wildcard arms for a SS with control that's flashed a real hit tool at the MLB level (unlike Urias had done prior).

I really liked Adames as a player and thought he would be a good target prior to the season, but didn’t think he was a realistic target. Him struggling this season must have had the Rays view him as expendable.

I think this trade could work out for both sides. Adames is a good defensive shortstop that also carries a quality bat. He also has some pop and hits right handed which is needed in this lineup. Rasmussen dominated in the minors, but has walk issues and his fastball seems to be pretty straight. The potential is there though. Feyereisen has done well this season, but also has walk issues. They should help out on the backend of the Rays’ bullpen.

Stearns must like Weigel and Sobotka over Rasmussen and Feyereisen.

I like the trade overall and think both sides will get what they desire from it. I’m okay with this trade.

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come? It might be early to tear it down and sell off, but doing it now would at least give us time to get a good draft pick instead of waiting a couple more months. Adames is an immediate help though. The control is huge and he upgrades our defense even more. This is an elite defense that just got even better.

Now sign Gold Glover Rizzo in the offseason and this defense would be the best in the game hands down.

Assume they'll make another roster move. Reyes gets optioned and what pitcher gets recalled? Milner and Weigel haven't been optioned for 10 days. Wahl and Yardley would seem to need more rehab time.

So are we basically throwing in the towel in on the guy we gave up Grisham for already?

I don't mind Adames personally as an acquisition but I'm not a big fan of trading with the Rays. Feels like every trade they ever make ends up being highway robbery in their favor.

As a plus, does this mean we don't have to see any more of Reyes, Peterson, Robertson and Lopes?

This is certainly interesting. I wish they didn't have to part with Rassmussen either but this makes the team better for years to come. Let's hope they can find some effective bullpen arms to fill the middle innings.

I don't think Stearns necessarily likes Weigel and Sobotka more than Rasmussen and Feyereisen; I think it's just the matter of needing to give up something good to get something good. And I think he (correctly) believes that the Brewers can acquire and develop relievers.

That's what I don't like. What are they going to do with Urias now? That Grisham/Davies trade gets worse and worse.

For those that complain that the Brewers don’t sell high on players, seems like they did just that with JP.

Might argue they bought low on Adames as well.

Luis Urias vs LHP: .315/.364/.465, 122 wRC+, .150 ISO, .354 wOBA

Willy Adames vs RHP: .272/.340/.434, 113 wRC+, .161 ISO, .333 wOBA

Platoon is likely IMO

Traded Grisham for and then Arcia traded away for to free up playing time for...

"Stearns, asked what this trade means for Luis Urias, says Urias can play a valuable role on the team this year and in the future with his ability to play all over the infield."

So no more Reyes and Urias takes over that utility role I'm guessing?

No?

We have a LHH 3B and LHH 2B, and Urias plays those positions well. Adames is also a RHH with reverse splits. Urias should play plenty still. Baseball isn't a game where 8 (or 9) players play the same position every game for 162 games, you need more than just your "starters".
