2021 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-10

Frelick was mocked in a ton of drafts going #7 to the Royals. Seems like really good value here.

Good value but they always seem to focus on shortstops and centerfielders on the draft. I would have preferred McLain

From Perfect Game (ranked their #10 draft prospect)…

10. Sal Frelick, OF, Boston College (3Y)

L-R, 5-9/175, Lexington, Mass.

Previously Drafted: Never Drafted

A multi-sport standout during his prep days who actually won the Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year award in football his senior year, Frelick has done nothing but thrive since arriving on campus, going from relative unknown to potential first round pick, to just about a lock inside the top-10. The Boston College center fielder thrived this spring as he continued to show some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the draft on a regular basis, rarely swinging and missing while still showing easy plus speed that can effect a game both on the bases and while covering a vast amount of ground to either gap in the outfield.

Watching the video has me excited. He’s not a launch monitor creation, but rather a nice line drive stroke. I especially liked seeing him hit pitches up in the zone.

He’s a hockey player. He will be good.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Harold Reynolds calls him a Brewer player without defining what exactly makes a Brewer player and I have no idea why he's covering this.

Well Brewers like their up the middle athletes

Don’t forget, he’s 5’9” but could still grow as well. I knew people that grew until almost 23…sadly I didn’t

Are you really holding out for the possibility that he grows. Wow some people will come up with anything to excuse this pick.

I never like when the first things they bring up about a player are “clubhouse guy”, “scrappy gamer”. Seems like a safe bet to make the major leagues but with a low ceiling. Boring pick. Hopefully not a big whiff while leaving a much higher ceiling Watson on the board.

From FanGraphs

A Massachusetts multi-sport prep standout (he was the Gatorade POY in football as a quarterback, as well as a lauded hockey player), Frelick emerged last spring playing outfield and putting up huge numbers for Boston College. He has several catalytic qualities already and might hit for more in-game power later as his swing and approach evolve. Right now Frelick is a slap-and-slash hitter who'll occasionally show you low-ball power. He has good vertical plate coverage and can catch pitches near the top of the zone. It takes projecting on some elements of Frelick's offense to see him as an impact regular, but so much of his skillset is either new or changing (he's also played some second base) and we're betting on late development here because of the multi-sport, Northeast background and time lost due to a 2019 knee injury/surgery.

There it is what a joke. Wish our Farm director had a lick of balls. But nope gotta stick to the model that worked so well so far.

Yeah we don't have enough middle of the diamond athletes with no power.

This has two meanings and I wish I knew which one you meant.

Not sure why I have a height bias in outfielders, but when I see his projections as a limited power type, I imagine they drafted Nori Aoki 2.0.

The Marlins have been in on Watson forever. It's very possible they had a deal worked out with him in the unlikely event he made it this far, and that's a luxury the Brewers probably weren't able to match.

Just saw we took Frelick with Watson still on the board. Either he is unsignable or Milwaukee is taking Ls all over tonight SMH. Our farm system is 29th ranked. Maybe it’s time to deviate from the player model we lean so heavily on apparently hmmm.

We've graduated or traded for Narvaez, Hiura, Adames, Urias, Yelich, Woodruff, Burnes, Peralta, Houser, Hader, Williams, Suter & won the 7th most games in MLB over the last four years.

29th ranked farm or not, Ashby, Small, Mitchell & Turang are all due to start coming up over the next couple years & look like potential MLB contributors at this point.

The models are working just fine.

Frelick doesn't strikeout, he's productive, and improving. Another terrific Todd Johnson pick.
