The Milwaukee Brewers are finalizing a deal to acquire left-hander Daniel Norris from the Detroit Tigers, sources tell @kileymcd and me.

The optimistic view of this... his FIP (3.78) and xFIP (3.54) are much better than his actual ERA (5.89). The Brewers with their defense have gotten in general better ERA's than FIP/xFIP would indicate, so if they can continue that trend with Norris, that would be good.

 

 

He's also been very good against lefties. So if you can minimize his appearances against lefties, he could work out (although the 3 batter minimum could make that difficult):

Not convinced this is an upgrade over Gustave for last man in the pen. Feels like one of those times Stearns makes a trade for the sake of it. Not that he would be the first to be blessed by Chris Hook upon arriving and end up being pretty good.

Fastball, slider change-up guy that throws in the mid 90s. Pomeranz a little different with his knuckle-curve, but otherwise pretty similar profile. Obviously the Brewers see something in him that they can fix. He's been showing much better as a reliever since the All-Star break.

He was a multi-inning guy last year. Maybe just trying to reduce the number of innings Suter pitches going forward. Suter's workload is climbing quickly.

His ERA inflated, per his FIP of 3.78. He's been productive in the past two seasons, but not so much this year. Likely hurt by his bad Tigers team, but also possible they see something they can tweak to make him effective again.

 

This staff certainly has a great record of doing so with pen guys.

Just having another competent arm helps the Brewers repeat the success they’ve had in recent Septembers, post roster expansion. Plus it gives the top arms additional rest so they’re fresh for the postseason.

Norris was pretty darn good as a reliever in 2020...looking at his 2021, he's had 3 blowup appearances where he's given up more than 2ER, the last time in mid June. His July BAA is 0.107 with a 0.72 WHIP across 10 appearances. If nothing else he's a good arm with experience that should help add depth to the middle of the bullpen, and he does appear to be a weapon against LH hitters. In Stearns' comments about the Escobar trade he talked about the importance of covering themselves in all scenarios for the stretch run. This seems like one of those insurance deals to get another lefty in the pen in case we need one down the way maybe?

Meh. Could be a revival candidate, but I would rather not have to bank on it. Hope this isn't our only pen move.

His LHB/RHB splits are noteworthy. I do think if there's a valid criticism of CC's managing, it's that he doesn't always setup his lefty relievers for success. Rather than using them mainly as out-getters vs. LHB, he often wants to use them in a multi-inning role. Norris seems like a guy that should be brought in when the 'due up' is LHB/RHB/LHB, and he probably should be limited otherwise until he shows that those splits are reverting back to his more modest career splits rather than the absurd difference from 2021 thus far.

Among 132 relievers with at least 50 IP since 2020 Norris ranks 34th in FIP- (75) and 18th in xFIP- (76).

 

The front office seems to believe those underlying indicators are more indicative of Daniel's true talent level than his ERA- of 104.
