As much as we hate the Cardinals, are you rooting for Pujols to get to 700?

No, I'm not. I'm not a fan of Pujols. He never tested positive, but I believe he was a steroid user. His personal trainer and all that.

Which...to be fair, most of baseball was on roids at that time, but he did the holier than thou routine and...I just don't believe it.

I don't think he's any different than Bonds, other than Bonds, he just comes off as Griffey.

May an astroid strike this earth if I ever root for the Cardinals in any way.

No. It bothers me that the Cardinals pull an MLB senior citizen off the scrap heap, and he's suddenly hitting like he did 15 years ago. Sick of that franchise's perpetual rabbit's foot.

Add to that, he was really mailing it in for the Angels in his time there. He looked like Bartolo Colon for a few years. And now, he didn't go Gabe Kapler or anything but I can't see his gut waddlin around inside his jersey when he runs the bases anymore. So clearly he put in some effort finally. I'm also convinced he's a juicer that never got caught and he's one of the guys that lied about his age.

If he was still on the Angels I'd definitely be rooting for him to get to 700. It's just cool seeing history and I've never had a huge issue with the guy. Being on the Cardinals while we're trying to chase them down makes it a little more difficult, but I'd still like to see him at least pass A-Rod on the list.

Ultimately don't care but no I'm not routing for him in any way. He's not Molina level of baseball "holier-than-thou, play the game the right way" crap but he was right up there when he was a Cardinal. Personally, I enjoyed him sucking in LA.

I'm firmly in the "don't care" category, I just can't conjure the hatred for Pujols that I have for Molina.

I do agree with those that are sick of seeing guys suddenly discover the fountain of youth as a Cardinal. I thought Pujols was washed up 5 years ago.

In 2022, with few exceptions, Pujols  has got all his homers off below average pitchers (See below).

That he's near 700 speaks more to the scarcity of quality pitching in modern era MLB, than Pujols being a feared slugger at 42 (?) years old, or really the last 5-6 years or so.

Drew Lynch   KCR   4.70era

Ashby   (2)     MIL   4.59era

Josh VanMeter PIT (non-pitcher)

Chris Sanchez PHI  5.34era

Mitch White   LAD  4.67era

Trevor Richards TOR  4.53era

Austin Gomber (2) COL 5.59era

Bumgarner ARI (2)  4.87era

Ross Detweiler CIN 4.44era (since been released)

Taylor Rogers MIL  4.27era

Drew Smyly   CHC  3.24era

Chase DeJong PIT 1.45era

Moreover, Willie Mays hit 49 of his 660 Homeruns off Hall of Fame Pitchers (Spahn, Drysdale, Koufax. Fergie Jenkins, Bob Gibson, Phil Niekro, Jim Bunning and Steve Carlton). Pujols has but 13 of his 694 homeruns off Hall of Famers or likely Hall of Famers (Randy Johnson, Smoltz, Maddux, Grienke, Sabathia). Not to mention the playing fields in some of today's stadiums are geared for the long ball as opposed to Forbes Field etc. from the old days.

I know nothing of the man, Albert Pujols, or his decisions regarding performance-enhancing drugs. I also won't compare those whispers to that of our own gem of a hitter.

BUT!

I hate him; I hate him because he was a Cardinal. I hate him because it's just sports. Just as the blind, irrational love we have for our teams is "just sports," so is our hatred for our rivals. Sports, like with great novels, soap operas, and professional wrestling, are better when there is a heel; when there is an irrational reason to hate. With sports (but not in life), hatred and schadenfreude are completely acceptable, even encouraged. Embrace your hate. (But just with sports).

I hope it’s revealed La Russa took leave to inject pujols with roids like the good ol days and he’s suspended after 699
