I saw this whole thing play out yesterday. Complete clown. O'Neill got benched for not running the bases hard enough, but watching the replay I just don't see him letting up at any point. So more or less the Cardinals manager publicly benched O'Neill and criticized him publicly for a made up reason. To make this manager look even more stupid, I'll add that O'Neill is coming off a hamstring injury and has a history of hamstring injuries. So one could certainly understand if he was only going 95 percent vs unleashing fully and risking aggravating the injury. How sad when the young player is more mature and professional than the manager...

Yeah i think that's it, I can't find footage that follows him running the basepaths, though I did think he could have been further down the path than he was, with his injury issues and technique that he's working on, that could easily throw him out of rhythm and lose some speed.

If only they had Yelich running the bases

But yeah, I don't think Marmol has done himself justice here, O'Neill is handling it well though it has to be said

Frat bro-looking dude looks like he spends all of his off-time on the leg press machine. That might have something to do with it.

He was out by a good amount. I don't think any amount of trying harder would have made him safe. Almost seems like the manager is throwing a player under the bus to protect his third base coach. Which is stupid because every fan hates their team's third base coach.

He didn't really seem to be running all that hard.

Regardless, I enjoy the way the Cardinals manager is handling his team.

This.

Quick Pitch on MLB Network had something on this last night/this morning and they have the camera view of O’Neil going from second to home and it looks like he’s going at like 3/4 speed with little effort to me.

Couldn’t happen to a better franchise.

I have absolutely no doubt that they will figure it out, some no-name middle infielder named Skippy McGillicuddyson will matriculate out of thin air to hit .380 for them the 2nd half of the season, they'll con some team into handing them an ace and a closer at the deadline for a couple A-ball rejects, and they'll be in the hunt again come September. Because Cardinals.

Can you imagine the furore if the Crew are 4 or even 6 games up on the cards after 9 games?

This isn't MLB news, per say, but I saw this also on Quick Pitch last night and wanted to comment.

Yesterday, Miami and Minnesota played a game in Miami with the roof open and their "windows" open.  It was beautiful!  Probably the best I've ever seen that mausoleum, er I mean stadium.  It's too bad that they can't play more games with the roof open down there.  Darn Florida rain . . .

I just saw that view. He definitely wasn't trying his hardest till he looked over and saw the ball coming in.

I looked up a few of his triples and while a slow runner...that certainly wasn't his highest gear. He looked like he wasn't actually expecting that throw into home. Considering it was 4-1 in the 7th, I think he was banking on that throw going to third to hold the other runner at second.

Gamer McBattler, Lars Eckbar, David Nutestein. Just a class team that finds a way.

Wouldn't it be great if Cardinal clubhouse dissention imploded their season?

It would be but their downfall is going to be their starting pitching.  The 2023 Cardinals look like the 2013 Brewers with better overall hitting.

Cardinals starting pitching last I saw had over 7 ERA to start the season, 3rd worst in MLB. Naturally we face the one guy who started well right off the rip. It's early of course, but you love to see a bad start from them.

Regarding the O'Neill incident, I didn't see him as running slowly and not putting in effort...many of you seem to think that is the case so maybe I saw that differently. I also agree with the consensus that the much bigger problem is calling our your player publicly like that. It's generally a problem when the 20-something is more mature and more of an adult than the manager...

He was a little fortunate with 7 walks issues, the Blue Jays had a bit of an off day other than that, but certainly the best results so far from him. I think the first game tonight is huge, set the tone, and up the ante some

I agree, I don't think he was slow, and totally understandable pace given his injury record and early in  season. Never should've been sent

I am not sure 7 walks and a hit batter qualifies as starting well right off the rip.

So you're telling me ERA isn't the only thing to look at to determine a good start? I was a bit lazy when looking at SP stats and only looked at ERA in this case. Yes agreed, not a good start.

Okay technically MiLB, but please marvel at this no-hitter box score.

For context, the SP threw a nice 6 innings of no-hit work. The first reliever walked four guys and the second reliever walked one and hit FOUR guys. Mixed in there was a catching error by an OFer on a fly ball to clear the bases and one of the runs was scored on a wild pitch. The OFer dropping the ball would have been the third out, instead the game went from 3-1 to 3-4. The two relievers eventually did record the three outs needed, but not till they gave up 7-runs on zero hits.

The Rays are 12 - 0 and have a team payroll that's less than the combined salaries of Aaron Judge and Garrit Cole.

Now 13-0 and tied the 1987 Brewers  AL record for consecutive wins to start the season. Booooo!!!

If the record falls, the curse is broken and we can go back to the World Series!

(that’s what I’m telling myself…)
