Frelick is a rookie and I like him but he's not great yet though I believe he will be. Absolutely no one is envious of the Brewers having Canha who is the very definition of mediocrity.

A 114 wRC+ is not the definition of mediocrity. Any contender would be happy to have him.

And the guy who literally gave up the game-winning is who everyone wanted to pitch  earlier.

Milner has had a very good season no one would have blamed him if he had blown the game instead of Chafin who isn't good.

I need to understand why Anderson is still here. 13 innings you can't buy a hit and no call. This is why Donaldson needs to be called up. He still can run into a fastball maybe in a big spot. Anderson is just a season ticket holder now.

I think he’s up tomorrow with the Marlins throwing two lefties.

You have to be kidding me, Craig. HOBY WAS AVAILABLE?

Again, there's a difference between "available" and "yeah, we can use him if the game goes 13 innings, but that's the only way". I'd have rather seen Wilson with the 3-1 lead. But they talk to everyone in the pen before a game, and we don't know what goes into that. If Wilson wasn't available for one inning, I'm not sure I know why, because I'm not there for those meetings. If he was fresh & ready to go, then yeah, It's a head-scratcher.

It wouldn't surprise me. But I don't expect a straight platoon with Monasterio sliding to 2B every time a lefty throws, either. It certainly lengthens your bench options if nothing else, whether Donaldson is in the lineup or not.

Excellent point. The Brewers are in first place by three games with 20 to play. You must be thrilled.

Because the season as a whole numbers are dragged down by a bunch of players who are no longer receiving plate appearances.

Since June 16, so almost three months now, the Brewers have been running a 94 wRC+ while going 45-29 over that stretch.

No great shakes, but also a large improvement over the 78 wRC+ they posted from 0420 to 0615 after the 14-5 start (where they posted a 102 wRC+).

If we did that, this whole thread wouldn't be the clownshow I'm reading. They lost a tough game today. I didn't like some of the decisions made. We scored a lot of runs the last two days. We didn't today, against one of the games' best starters.

Season as a whole? They're 16 games over .500 & in first place despite some flaws. I think that's a positive.

This will be my third post in about 2 weeks about Chafen needing to be sent down or DFA'd, I think his arm is shot.

If any of these playoff projection sites had any respectability they would have to drop any team that lost a ten inning no hitter by about 50% points.

we should be about a 44% chance of making the playoffs.   😀😀😀😀

Lots of interesting and thoughtful conjecture here about who should have pitched and whether some guys should have bunted, etc. etc.

BOTTOM LINE: BREWERS CAN'T HIT! It's pretty simple. Contreras is probably the steadiest, and Adames has his moments, as does Yelich, But it seems that the way we have scored most of our runs this series involves bloops, walks, and errors.

This team reminds me too much of some of my daughters' softball teams: a good pitcher or 2, better than average throwing-catching- defense, but just not enough kids who could hit decent pitching. Once we got past our top pitcher or 2, we were at the mercy of any team who could hit; we just couldn't keep up. I know this isn't a great analogy, but the bottom line is that you can't win it all if you cannot hit.  And we can't hit.   We're gosh-durn lucky to be where we are. With a bit of luck, we'll hang on and win the division. After that, though: we are toast because WE CAN'T HIT.

PS- BUGHGHGHGHGH!!!!!

True. But it's despite our pathetic offense, which will get us in the end.

I’m thinking Donaldson is inserted to the lineup every time against LHP given how he hits against them.

Monasterio moving to 2B helps w negate what we’re getting from Turang right now vs LHP.

I think with game threads you have to take into account that each game is a separate event. Fans process every game, every day and then move on to the next day.

Today the Brewers did the worst thing they could have done. They not only lost, but they lost in very frustrating and maddening fashion with some questionable managerial decisions (or at least one very notable one) to make it worse. To top it off, they lost a game off their division lead.

If you want people to look at the season as a whole while a game is going on and shortly after, a game thread is the wrong place.

If Yelich is going to be out a few more days (which wouldn’t surprise me) and the Brewers were to call up Donaldson, they could just plug him in at DH with Canha in the OF. I seriously doubt that they would put him in the field right away.

Sveumrules brought up some numbers that illustrate it well. Compared to earlier this summer the offense is improved. Braves level? Of course not. Average? Depends on what day it is, I guess. I mean, there were many days in the last 4-5 weeks it was well-above average.

In a playoff scenario, facing a top-flight pitcher, we'll join a long list of teams that have to scratch for runs. You're right about that. In that case they may be bitten not by "not being good enough" but by not recognizing the value of a single run. I hated not asking Monasterio to bunt. If I had the chance to talk to CC it would go something like "You value run prevention. I couldn't agree more. In some of these close-game situations, when we're hitting, act like it. If you're putting extra pressure on an aspect of the team, then put it on the aspect we're strong at, that you value so much".

If he makes it up here, I think we'll see Monasterio move to 2B some days. I just don't expect it to be a constant, straight platoon.

Pretty sure CC doesn't manage based on who would receive the least blame.

I would rather have seen Wilson, everything being equal. It seldom is. Milner was what, the 5th guy out of the pen? Obviously they didn't want to use him unless they had to.

Its all pitching not the terrible offense that has us there for now.

The pitching has benefited greatly - 3.94 ERA vs 4.32 FIP - due to the Brewers defense, +50 DRS (2nd).

Those “terrible” hitters have been closer to average for most of the season while providing elite glove work.

It’s a symbiotic relationship.
