Cubs down 6-0. It's a great night.

And with only 3 outs left.

Edit: and Stroman pitching out of the bullpen.  Stroman not ready to go back to the rotation is huge.

Mr. Steele is now 40 IP over his previous high for a season.

For a pre-arby starter in what is his 2nd full MLB season, that wouldn't be outside the norm...part of his maturation/development to take on that kind of increased workload.  Then you see he's the same age as Corbin Burnes (28) 😲 , and wonder when his arm is going to fall off over one of his next 3-4 starts.

Welp, when you're up 6-0 in the 9th you throw strikes and make the other team hit their way back in it.  And to their credit, the Cubs have done just that.

Now get two damn outs without giving up two more runs.

D backs now have the tie breaker with the Cubs if it comes down to that.

Cubs may have a challenge holding off AZ and the Reds

Wade Miley had glowing reviews for Contreras tonight. How he totally changed up the gameplan after the first inning and got Miley back on track. I was so happy reading that then it made me think how annoying it is that Burnes demanded Caratini as his personal catcher. It basically eliminates the DH for 25% of our postseason games because Caratini will be catching and Contreras will be the DH

If I was a Cubs fan, the division would be the least of my concerns right now.

If the Dodgers lose tonight, the Brewers will be as close to the Dodgers as the Cubs are to the Brewers. Granted, we're done with the Dodgers and they have the season series over us, but still.

In terms of wins, the Cubs are as far back (or further depending on tonight’s final with the Mariners) from Brewers as the Brewers are from the Dodgers.

That sweep in LA looms very large

Caratini needs to catch for someone. If Corbin legitimately is more comfortable with Victor, it seems fine to me.

And with the long stretch of games it should help keep Contreras a little bit fresher.

Gotta love those nights when the magic number decreases by two. Seems like there has been quite a few of those the last week. Cubs are really scuffling now.

To the point where they need to worry about that playoff spot

they are the only team I don’t want in the three spot.   Not because I’m shaking in my boots.   It’s because they are going to have too many fans here.   It takes away our three home game advantage

I feel like you’re missing the point. Corbin gave up on Contreras very early in the season and demanded Caratini be his personal catcher. For the regular season that’s fine, but it’s it makes us weaker in the playoffs when Burnes is going to be starting over 25% of our games.

Game 1 of the playoffs instead of having Tyrone’s defense in RF with Canha at DH and Contreras behind home plate we get Canha in RF (worse defensively), Caratini at C (worse defensively and offensively), and Contreras at DH. With the scheduled off days in the playoffs, Caratini would have been lucky to start even a single game and now he will be starting a big chunk of them. That’s a lot of PA to be forced to a 58 wRC+ hitter since the all star break.

Who should pitch when Caratini catches?

Anyone. Nobody on the team should have demanded Caratini be their personal catcher. Miley just had glowing reviews for how Contreras has matured and grown behind the plate this year.

For a team that wins on the margins having to start a guy like Caratini in the playoffs could have some consequences.

You go from Taylor, Canha, Contreras playing to Caratini, Canha, Contreras playing. Here are their wRC+ since the ASB

Contreras - 133

Canha - 118

Taylor - 116

Caratini - 58

That’s a pretty sizeable drop off going from Taylor/Canha in the lineup to Caratini.

With the playoff schedule this season how many games do you think Caratini would have actually caught?

NLDS has 3 scheduled off days and the NLCS and WS have 2 scheduled off days.

I think his argument is that once we hit the playoffs, it should be Contreras catching every day to maximize the lineup. Which I could agree with and wouldn't have a problem with generally, but I don't know if that's the time to start messing with Burnes' mojo either since he basically has no rapport built up with Contreras at this point (which I think is also part of wiguy's point).
