Garrett Mitchell to go to Nashville on rehab assignment.

Already started yesterday. He went 0-4 with 3 K’s. Looked pretty lost up at the plate but I guess that’s not surprising for how much time he’s missed. I think at this point he’s probably just trending to be a pinch runner type role in the playoffs

If he is that rusty he may not even get called up at all.  I sure wouldn't call a person up just to run and that is how he got hurt in the 1st place diving into 3rd.

It will be interesting to see how the Brewers deploy Mitchell in the postseason, if at all. Teams can almost always use a speed guy on the bench but given this team's overall speed, I'm not sure if Mitchell is needed.

I suppose it will all come down to how well and quickly he rehabs in Nashville.

For the excitement of how many rookies would contribute in Milwaukee in 2023, I was mildly surprised to see the Brewers have only used 7 rookies this year. Granted, many are getting meaningful playing time.

The team record is 16 rookies in 2015. Ashley, Blazek, Centeno, Cravy, Davies, Goforth, Jungmann, Lopez, Peña, Perez, Peterson, Reed, Rivera, Rogers, Santana and Wagner.

Not much of a sample with 4 at bats.

He swung 10 times and whiffed 6 times. He hasn't played in games in months so that's not surprising, but he only has 8 games left at AAA to rehab. There's no way he gets the bat up to speed after missing almost 6 months of baseball.

Why can’t Wiemer keep that role?

if Mitchell can’t help offensively, he should probably continue to get healthy & be ready for Spring Training

Mitchell is both a better baserunner and faster human? Wiemer isn't anything special running the bases.

These are their MLB SB/CS numbers and BsR numbers.

Mitchell - 44 G, 130 PA, 9 SB to 0 CS, 3.0 BsR

Wiemer - 131 G, 410 PA, 11 SB to 4 CS, 0.7 BsR

Mitchell is significantly better.

I would love to see the Brewers address the bottom of their 28-man roster

If I was the GM - I would DFA Anderson, Chafin, & Tellez

There are several potential replacements for those players in Nashville - Toro or Black … Gasser or Small … take your pick & instant improvement

I would also option Wiemer as soon as either Mitchell or Perkins is adequate at the plate

Today would be a great day for these past due changes to the roster

I'm sure there will be some back end roster churn before the season is over, and for sure before the first round of the playoffs, but I'm not sure any such changes are really all that past due.

The Brewers have been playing at a 26-14 clip since August 1st and currently have their biggest division lead of the season at 5.5 games.

I may be wrong but I don’t understand why Anderson was kept on the roster when Donaldson was added

I know he is good defensively at two positions - 3B & RF … but aren’t those positions well covered defensively?

I also understand team chemistry & a player’s history … but Tellez has not been helpful upon his return

I’m not sure anyone would argue that Chafin should remain on the roster … if so - where is he adding value?

So … I believe the changes are past due in spite of our hot streak

We are certainly not benefiting from the roster increase from 26 to 28

If you DFA players every time someone has a bad month or two you will have a lot of players who will go on to have success with other teams.

I don’t disagree with you … but Anderson is not playing & he was struggling offensively for a few months back when he was playing

Chafin struggled before the trade with Arizona … he had a few decent games after arriving in Milwaukee - followed by several terrible outings

Tellez has not been good most of the year - especially after returning from injury … I would be surprised if he’s in the Brewers plans for 2024 so why not make the change now?

Are you defending a particular player with your post?

Designated for assignment

Definition. When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster.

How many of those rookies made their only appearances in September when rosters expanded to 40, which doesn’t happen anymore? I honestly have never heard of, or at least don’t remember several of them as Brewers

Also, rookies playing on teams with no playoff aspirations is less notable.

Except for Jones, all of the rookies this year had significant roles.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

1) Because Abraham Toro isn't going to put up a .886 OPS over 100 plate appearances like Tellez did in March/April of this season.

B) Tellez put up a .991 OPS over his first 21 plate appearances in August after coming off of the DL.
