In their small sample size, RHP Enoli Paredes is probably a bit more impressive than RHP Kevin Herget, but Herget comes with 2 option years (vs. none for Paredes). They’ve both gotten off to strong starts at Nashville, with Herget throwing max 94.0, Paredes max 96.5.

I didn’t think they’d pull the trigger on this yet (Ashby option). They need starters for 26 games in 27 days. Janson Junk was mediocre last week and they said they want recently-claimed Vladimir Gutierrez to get a few starts in AAA, but the team will figure it out.

honestly they probably need the arm. Ross will (probably) go 4 today at best and MIley is (probably) coming off the DL tomorrow.

They could want to give Tobias Myers a try next time through the rotation.

i always have a warm place in my heart for a sidearmer.

You’re mixing Kevin up with Jimmy. Jimmy is the side armer.

Why not give Carlos Hernandez a shot at a start?

Is it a service time issue?

Carlos Rodriguez? He's been terrible to start the year.

He has 11.2 innings at AAA with an ERA over 6. Needs time to get better. The guy is only 22 there is no need to rush

So Hergert could be here today and gone tomorrow when Miley activated.

I  think an MLB perk is free health care for life so he gets that at least.

I'm pretty sure you just get the right to buy into the MLB Health Insurance for the rest of your life.

I believe 43 days of service time gets you a 34K pension though...so really get 43 days!

Could this be the next man up for the Ashby spot this weekend?

I saw Myers pitch in spring training. Nothing special as far as stuff goes. Smoke and mirrors. I saw the Cubs touch him up a bit. Think Jason Alexander. I would not be clamoring for Myers. There is a reason he is 25 and has never broken through in the bigs.

It's possible. Feel like he's a guy that's going to be really good or get hit really hard with his 4 seamer. Gotta give it a try I feel like though.

It was ST and his velo likely wasn’t where it was supposed to be. In his last start he averaged 94 on his FB with almost 21 inches of IVB which contrary to your eye test is incredible stuff.

Here’s what Baseball America wrote about him as an early season statcast standout.

In his first start of the season, Myers averaged a pedestrian 92.8 mph with his fastball, but it had elite carry at 20.1 inches of IVB. Given the release height and velo, that graded out as roughly an average pitch. On Saturday, he dialed it up to 94.3 mph, while maintaining 20 inches of vert, inducing 12 whiffs on the pitch, in zone and out of zone. More importantly, he filled up the zone with the pitch, and combined with the bat-missing vert, presents a very solid base to build around.

“It appears the Brewers had him focus on his cutter as his primary secondary, coming in at 89 mph, with good separation off the fastball and has the potential to be a good contact quality management pitch that gets a decent number of whiffs. He mixes in a gyro slider with promising traits and good results so far (21.1% swinging strike percentage), as well as a curve and changeup that don’t project as well.

If the fastball, cutter and slider are as good as they’ve been in this short sample, Myers could join the Brewers rotation soon. He’s fully built up, has been shouldering a starter’s workload for almost eight seasons in the minors and looks like he could slide in to any rotation and be productive. I love rooting for the guys who have been grinding in the minors for almost a decade. Here’s hoping he gets to achieve his dream soon.“

Wow especially a guy getting off the mat after the 2022 season he had.  Would be a cool story.

I saw Mike Fiers pitching for the Nashville Sounds years ago before he became a productive starter. Myer's mechanics are very akin to Feirs with the high release. Fiers I think we a tab taller.

Bottom line, I just was not too impressed when I saw Myers pitch late in a game against the Cubs minor league guys.

Well, Ashby was a waste of money I am thinking.

Lets see how the season plays out.

He is recovering from MAJOR surgery and we don't know what he will look like when he is back to 100% or if he will even get there.

I think we will have a good idea by the end of the season

The Brewers have hardly spent any money on Ashby at this point, they have committed millions but not much wasted at this point. Way too early to reach a conclusion one way or the other. If I was a betting man would say those two option years will still be a bargain.

This is the other side of deals like Peralta's. When players choose to take early extensions, they're transferring the risk to the team. If they play well, they've cost themselves some money, but they're guaranteeing themselves a lot of money in case of injury or underperformance.

I hope Ashby is able to find those couple of MPH's he's lost on his fastball, but even if he never does I still think the Brewers need to take the risk and sign deals like this. The wins should outweigh the losses, and the losses are not ones that will seriously hamper the Brewers' ability to put a competitive team on the field going forward.

As it stands now, Ashby's looking very hittable. He either needs to get his velocity back, or learn how to pitch with his new arsenal.

Yah, not saying they shouldn't have done it or that it will really hamper them in any way. But a waste would still be a waste. Much like the Peralta deal the worst case felt like a pretty dominant (maybe even elite) bullpen arm due to the wiff%.

Ashby's days as a starter seem to be at a bit of a risk and he just hasn't had the whiff%/velo he once had....so his ceiling may be crashing down in general. Though I wonder if the deal and those option years may give him a longer leash to be starter. If he moves the bullpen you may as well just rip up those options. Could play the long game and hope he still becomes a decent starter , then we can have nice 1-year deals for a starter.
