I believe Craig Counsell became manager of the Brewers 9 years ago tomorrow

Here’s hoping we sweep the Cubbies or at least win the series

I still don’t like our current manager Murphy & former manager Counsell being chummy

I happened to catch the end of the Cubs-Mets game the other day with my very motherly aging mother who is a big Brewer fan. The one the Cubs won after the ump AND replay blew the call at the plate in the ninth inning.

Mom let out a happy victory exclamation when replay made their decision.  I shook my head confusedly asking "You cheering for the Cubs?!?"

"Yeah, Craig Counsell is on the Cubs," she replied.

She just doesn't get it.

I'm just not angry at Counsell for whatever reason. I'm disappointed he went to the Cubs but I get it, too. They gave him a lot of money. I simply don't resent players or coaches following their wallet, I guess.

Though I would have preferred him going somewhere other than Wrigley, obviously.

Craig Counsell is just a guy. To quote Brad Pitt's character in Seven, "Just because [he's] got a library card doesn't make him Yoda."

[Spoilers] Of course, Yoda did end up being the killer in Seven but it's still a good point overall.

can we just get over it? He was a great manager for the brewers (maybe the best in team history). He plyed out his contract to the best of his abilities and took the highest offer that just happened to be our chief rival. How many threads do we need about how much we hate him?

I don't hate Craig Counsell, I do hate the Cubs, so I will be rooting against him hard as long as he isn't a Brewer.

I really wouldn't have cared at all had he gone anywhere other than Chicago or St. Louis.  Since he chose to go to the Cubs, he deserves all the ire he gets and then some.

I am honestly quite happy he left, as I think there really needed to be a change...The results were getting stale, and a new vision needed to happen.

That said:

I hope he gets booed vigorously and loudly for 9 straight innings every time he steps on the field at AmFam for the rest of his career.

I hope they never win a game under his watch.

I hope his career from this day forward is so horrible that he wishes he never left.

@TURBOi'm shocked that he said he was surprised about the pushback he got from Brewer fans, having coaches and played in that rivalry for as long as he did.

Yeah, made no sense.  Either he was naïve, or just plain lying.

Who hates Counsell? I loved him as our manager.

I do “hate” that he chose to go to Chicago.

I like him as a person & player & as (our) manager.

I don’t like that he & Murph are buddies.

I love this post! I agree from top to bottom.

Well done, TURBO! 💪👏🙌🏼

Yeah if he was truly shocked then he never was “ one of us” like he said all those years.

if he was “ born to be a Brewer” then he should have known the reaction…..somebody who truly is proud of his Wisconsin heritage would never turn their back on an organization that was “in his blood” for a few million……especially when the Brewers offered to make him the highest paid manager……obviously not as much as the Cubs offered.

i can honestly say I would never have made that move……but he certainly had every right to do so……..the whole resetting of managers salary BS just made me want to puke……….

It's not the money part that bothers me. Yes, it's going to a hated rival but mostly it's saying he's taking lots of cash to better the lives of all managers in the league, while take another manager's job.

I don't blame him for Ross losing his job. As a person who also follows the Cubs due to my involvement with North Side Baseball, Ross was not a good manager. The Cubs wanted out from under his management and they were the ones who fired Ross, Counsell just happened to be his replacement.

To me, it wasn't whether or not Ross was a good manager (there are plenty of people who say he was), it's the hypocrisy.

It's hard to hate on Counsell because he's clearly a nice guy and a good person, but I also hope his tenure in Chicago is a complete disaster.

He's going to get rightfully booed in Milwaukee, but I don't think the boos are going to be as angry and passionate as other villains like Manny Machado. At least not after the first series.

No it means that he is a real Brewer fan and doesn't give a crap about the Cubs like some Johnny -Come-Lately. What you care about are the White Sox where any game could end up with Phil Garner rushing the field to throw down.

Unforunately fueds like Garner vs Bevington are over with free agency, all of the interleague play and coaching moving around so often.

I think it's important to note that when Counsell was a "fan", the Brewers were in the American League. By the time the Cubs became a division rival, Counsell had been a major leaguer for several years. And at that point, guys just don't form visceral hatred of entire franchises most of the time.

Players and managers take it much less personal than fans, due to free agency and the increase in inter league play (less divisional play)
