Counsell is a traitor to his city and state!

That said, I wish no ill-will to him and his family.

Apparently the answer to my question is YES

Not really. Freddy just sucked today and couldn't throw strikes. If he pitched well that strategy would have sucked.

Or maybe the Brewer batters can’t hit. This was the worst possible outcome this weekend. They couldn’t even hit themselves out of a wet paper bag. What a total embarrassment. I could name at least 5 players I would send down to AAA or below. Thank goodness we have a top 5 minor league ranking, the only trouble with that is they are all AAAA players.

Brewers had the 2nd best offense in baseball by wRC+ and 3rd best by R/G coming into today....

Dude catching every single day. He needs days off. Brewers refuse.

Yeah. Problem is Sanchez is the alternative and he is a way worse defender. No space on the 40-man for another catcher and it would be silly to carry 3.

Keep in mind, right now Yelich, Devin Williams (remember him), Miley, and Garrett Mitchell are on the DL (along with Junis, DL Hall, Bukaskas) and Sanchez is limited.  It's no wonder they're struggling a bit now.

So this Assad guy was supposed to be not that good...

Fun fact - Cubs still have more losses.

Assad has one of the lowest ERA's in the MLB since July last year. He doesn't have amazing stuff but he just continues to get great results.

Through Peralta's start today this is how our SP has fared on the year.

105 ERA- (16th)
118 FIP- (29th)
110 xFIP- (26th)
4.35 SIERA (26th)
20.3% K-rate (25th)
9.4% BB-rate (25th)
1.35 WHIP (22nd)
88.8 Avg EV (12th)
9.3% barrel rate (27th)
37.4% hard hit rate (14th)

Hopefully Hall finds the velo coming off the IL and can help out the rotation otherwise this feels like an issue that will plague the team all season.

Brewers team batting average is .217 the past 2 weeks.  It has completely disappeared.

Two things stuck out to me today (other than we didn't put up enough good ABs, which will happen again, and to most teams, during the next five months. Fortunately the opposite will happen, too):

Peralta pitched as if the wind was blowing out, is the best way I can describe his outing. Then a couple bad things happen, and he (and Contreras) just lose it completely. HBP to the #9 hitter w/ two strikes, that isn't "staff ace" stuff.

Top of the fifth, still 0-0, we get Perkins on to lead off the inning. Two outs later he's still perched at first. Not putting him in motion there was pretty inexcusable. I mean, on Friday vs Amaya Contreras picks up a SB. Bauers picks up a SB. Adames, who isn't fast, picks up a SB. And Amaya has thrown out 1 of 18 coming in. Ugly.

Sanchez is on the active roster and is the backup catcher.

Despite their stats to date I continue to be bearish on the Brewers offense.

Since their hot streak last month they have had an alarming number of low run games (3 runs or less) and that’s not going to cut it with the pitching staff they have.

It seems to me that the hot streak was fueled by some unsustainable performances and that is starting to show through.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

They are also missing the guy who was the best hitter in that stretch. Did you forget that?

The question is .... If/when he comes back how long till the next back issue?

It's something he will deal with the rest of his career in my opinion.

This is a guy who has played 144 and 154 games the last 2 seasons. I don't think it's an automatic bet that he's going back on the IL at some point this season.

Nope, but his recent history, including nagging injuries, suggests that he isn’t going to sustain an OPS over 1.100 either.

He’s played a lot of games the last two years but his OPS those two years have been .738 and .818

They had Bauers and Dunn hitting in the middle of the order even when Yelich was playing, and to me that’s a sign of a questionable offense.

Assad has plus command of 5 pitches. His command makes him a good starter.

Well, he did manage in San Diego awhile back as I recall ... Papa Murphy makes good pizza, too!  :classic_love:

I believe he was interim manager on a bad team & did not get hired after the season

Because he was Counsell’s mentor from college - he got an opportunity in Milwaukee

When Craig departed for the dark side - he was chosen to become manager to keep things as similar as possible to the previous regime

He isn’t great with in game decisions

Time will tell if he is a good choice

Gameplan. Dare him to get a strike with breaking pitch.

That sounds like-Freddy tips his breaking pitches.  So Cubs used that cheat code. CC maybe been privy to this last season.

You really can't blame Counsell for jumping ship when you size these teams up top to bottom. I mean especially given he knew the pitching was going to crater. Need pitching? Cubs go and bring in the Asian guy who is unhittable. Brewers bring up Janson Junk.

Yeah I can definitely see why you would want their roster over ours for this season.

Yeah, because all you have to do is decide who you want, and it's done. Because everybody knows that all MLB teams have exactly the same finances.

Janson Junk was brought up to eat innings in case of a game such as this one, same as Martin a couple days ago. He's similar to the guys many teams promote for exactly the same situations. He's not the answer to their "needing pitching" and was never purported to be.

Through his first 2-3 starts Peralta was pretty much just as unhittable as the "Asian guy". The rotation needs to improve, I think everybody knows that. Maybe we should let the paltry 129 games that remain, play out.
