I wonder what his odds are of ROY if he maintains this pace. Can't say I know what other rookies are doing so I really don't know. Got to wonder if name recognition is an issue as well.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Ortiz is currently at 155 wRC+ | 2.0 WAR. Next best position player is Michael Busch at 124 wRC+ | 1.1 WAR.

Imanaga (2.4 rWAR), Gavin Stone (1.9 rWAR) and Yamamoto (1.5 rWAR) are probably Joey’s closest competition at this point.

Then there’s that Bryan Hudson dude (+1.77 WPA) kind of flying under the radar too.

Not sure if this has been talked about, but would Joey Ortiz be eligible for the prospect promotion incentive pick if he wins ROY? I believe he was rated as a top 100 prospect prior to the season starting.

Originally it was thought to be no. Then it changed to yes. Hopefully it stays as a yes because he's a legit threat for that ROY award right now.

I would add Paul Skenes, too. He's been too dominant despite only 4 starts and has the buzz factor.

Unpopular opinion: I believe - based on Ortiz alone (six years) - Brewers win the Burnes to Baltimore trade … anything DL Hall can add to that trade is gravy … & then there is the comp pick!

Note: I split the Rookie of the month (and Year?) discussion to its own topic since it was a bit hidden in the Burnes' trade discussion.  And this certainly should be highlighted for Ortiz!

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Good call, just glanced at the top of the rookie leaderboards and he isn't quite up there yet with the lower IP.

Looks like the local sports book has it +100 Imanaga | +200 Skenes | +650 Yamamoto | +1000 Ortiz at the moment.

Position players are way more likely to win ROY, so that helps. Potentially splitting the Dodger vote helps and if the Cubs can't turn it around Ortiz being on a contender helps. It would definitely be huge to add another pick from that deal.

Does anyone have a definitive answer on whether or not Ortiz is eligible for a PPI pick? According to the following excerpt he isn't :(

From MLB.com article on February 6th, 2024:

Quote

Can a player lose eligibility?
Yes. PPI eligibility only extends to the clubs for which prospects make their MLB debuts. If a prospect is traded after making his debut, his PPI eligibility is nullified for his new club, even if he still has rookie status.

For example, No. 63 overall prospect Joey Ortiz debuted last year with the Orioles but still had his rookie eligibility for 2024. However, he was recently traded to the Brewers in the Corbin Burnes deal, so despite landing on at least two of three preseason Top 100 lists, Ortiz won't net Milwaukee an additional pick no matter what he accomplishes in 2024.

I always wondered why they just don’t have 2 awards…….rookie of the year and rookie pitcher of the year?

but I may be just weird…..I never thought it was right for pitchers to be able to win Cy Young and MVP.

Just have 1 award for pitchers and 1 for position players. 🤷‍♂️
