R.I.P. Pete. Just read "Charlie Hustle" a few weeks ago. I recommend it. Whether you were a fan or not, can't argue that he wasn't entertaining.

Life time ban..  now that he's dead, he can go in.

I can guarantee he'll never again place a bet that will call into question the integrity of the game.

Nobody hustled like him…gritty. Gutsy. Managed and played, ok. Same time. More wins than DiMaggio played.

Heard him speak on how he doesn’t remember popping out to the 3B in foul territory, for whatever that means. A rare bird. Just a truly remarkable player. Definition of a gamer.

The same bull headed determination that got him to 4,256 prevented him from owning up to his betting on baseball, and ultimately getting into the Hall.

His life was essentially like a Greek Tragedy on AstroTurf.

Pretty odd that this news broke a while ago and everyone but mlb.com has something about his death on their website.

How is it odd? It's not a new site. It's the "Major League Baseball" site, and he is banned from Major League Baseball.

Very well put.

Few people ever existed who did a worse job of deciding who to befriend, and who to shun.

From a purely baseball standpoint, he was one of the players I tried to emulate as a kid. I doubt anyone on the diamond ever did as much with the gifts he had than Pete.

I was 100% against Rose being in the Hall of Fame because he bet on baseball.  But now that owners have partnered with sportsbook and make money from gambling on baseball, I completely changed my tune on Rose.  As long as there is no evidence that he bet against his own team, then I fully support him going in.  If owners can make money from gambling on baseball, no reason players shouldn't be able to do the same thing unless there is evidence that they bet against their own team (and threw games).

RIP one of the greats

Pete Rose 3562 games played with 4256 hits and 1566 walks.  That is crazy crazy good.

HBO Max had a pretty good documentary series on Rose this past summer.  Not really surprised he was never let back in based on his past actions but still sad.

Sports betting Companies are some of their biggest advertising/partners. Not letting Rose into the HOF is 100% pure narcissistic hypocrisy by MLB.

No, it really isn't.  He put his pitchers' careers in jeopardy every time he put 50 bucks on the Reds.

He should never get in, dead or alive.

A transcendent player in the 60s and 70s. For me, though, who really starting paying attention to baseball in 78 or so, it's hard not to remember the late-career Rose. He wasn't helping his team the last couple years, the manager* seemingly just put him in for the sake of progress toward the all-time hit record. It seemed pretty gross to me.

The incessant ads for gambling on sports in 2024 (which are admittedly super gross and hypocritical and make me enjoy the experience less) don't change the fact that Rose knew the rules, at the time it was the one bright line you must not cross.

*When Pete Rose broke the record, Pete Rose was also the manager. Maybe his head was inflated enough to convince himself that he was helping the team?

I think it's more than just betting against his team.  He was apparently deep in debt to bookies who I'm sure wouldn't have thought twice about asking for favors from an MLB manager that would help them make even more money.  If Rose bet on the Thursday game he was managing, how do you think he managed the Wednesday game?

What he allegedly did, if allowed or even overlooked, would destroy the credibility of the entire sport.  Sadly, he earned his lifetime ban.  I'm in favor of him being inducted posthumously though.  His plaque can list all his accomplishments and then state that he was banned from baseball for the rest of his life for gambling on his own team.  Tell the entire story.

Agree with all of this. There should be no "Official Gambling Partner of Major League Baseball".

But the fact that there is, does not exonerate Pete.
