Foscue plays 1b, 2b and 3b

Braun also played 3B but that doesn't mean he should have. Foscue is a 1B/DH

He had .978 fielding% at 2b in 2023 and a .979 in 2024.  He can play 2nd.

I know Fielding Percentage doesn't tell the whole story, but he can play 2nd base.

If all you have to use is fielding percentage, then you don't have a strong argument.

From Baseball America: "Defensively, Foscue does not have the range, mobility or arm strength to stick up the middle or at third base."

Jim Bowden just suggested a trade of Devin Williams for Gavin Lux and Just Wrobleski.

I’d do that trade in a second.

I think Bowden is once again way off on this one.  Lux is a -7 UZR over his career at 2B. Not what Milwaukee would want for a team that relies on defense to save runs. Last year he hit .251/.703 OPS.  He does next to nothing for the offense and weakens the defense. Wrobleski in AAA last year: 5.34 ERA/more hits than IPs/1.81 WHIP/5.8 walks per 9. I think the Brewers could ask for better pitching (River Ryan for instance) and tell the Dodgers to keep Lux.

I think all of this (correct) talk of every option being a lousy defender demonstrates why the Brewers (and me) valued Joey Ortiz so much. Good glove/competent sticks are harder to find than people think.

Lux to the Brewers is the proposal that just won't die. Please, I beg the world, let it die.

For real. If the Brewers wanted dude they probably could have had him at some point for Hader or Burnes or Adames…and it’s never come together.

Probably because the Brewers don’t value him all that highly.

I keep coming back to a deal with Toronto as I continually see their abundance of infield depth and need for a closer.  While some are concerned about Bohm's defensive shortcomings, how about a deal with Toronto that includes Ernie Clement, a finalist for the Gold Glove at 3rd base this year?

A thought (baseballtradevalues numbers in parenthesis)...

Brewers send D. Williams (9.1), Elvis Peguero (5.9) and T Black (12.0)

Blue Jays send E. Clement (5.9), and S. Horwitz (28.0)

Toronto gets their closer, a second bullpen piece and Black, a Canadian that doesn't fit with our defensive lineup

Milwaukee gets a defensive 3rd Baseman (that can move to utility if Boeve or Wilken show they are ready sooner rather than later) and a LH 1st baseman to platoon/replace Hoskins in the future.

I know some will be disappointed that Devin doesn't bring back a "bigger name", but I really wonder how much he will garner with only 1 year of control remaining.

This is pretty great for a few reasons. One, I have never heard of Ernie Clement but he had an interesting 2024. He doesn't walk but he did have a few homers sneak over the fence. He hits RHP better than LHP so he isn't really a platoon guy. I think he would be fine as a cheap first off of the bench guy.

Horwitz is absolutely a platoon 1B/DH at this point but at least it's on the strong side. Defensively he is a little below average/average but I have confidence he would be better than Hoskins there moving forward. I like him as a cheap 2 WAR guy under control for a few years.

A tweak I would make is include Payamps instead of Peguero just for control reasons but wouldn't say no for that reason alone.

After this, I would sign Moncada and Grichuck to round out the roster. Grichuck would be a nice LHP platoon DH guy/corner outfielder. This team would fit under budget. I would find a way to trade Frelick in this scenario.

Lineup

Chourio (RF)

Yelich (LF)

Contreras (C)

Horwitz/Hoskins (1B)

Hoskins/Grichuk (DH)

Mitchell (CF)

Moncada (3B)

Ortiz (SS)

Turang (2B)

Bench: Haase, Clement, Grichuk, Perkins

I don’t hate this Toronto deal but I’d prefer Bassitt straight up for Williams or as the main piece.  Maybe deal could be expanded to include Tyler black and Horwitz too though.

I just don't see any way that we're going to have interest in Bassitt - who is also a FA at the end of next season, and is also owed $22M this upcoming season.

I suppose there is zero chance that we could get Orelvis Martinez from the Jays in a Devin deal?  I know he was suspended 80 games last year for testing positive for a banned substance.  Maybe that would make him more available as a Top 100ish type prospect, but at the same time - maybe that would detract other teams from being interested in him?

With regards to a Devin trade, I think my order of preference here is

1 - One legit top 100 prospect (obviously the higher regarded the better) with helium
2 - Multiple lower level lottery tickets with intriguing traits
3 - Solid if unspectacular major league starting pitcher with multiple years of control
4 - Getting hit by a bus
5 - Stopgap IF with a year left on his deal

I guess if this is the best they could do after they tried all other deals, Milwaukee could live with it. Clement doesn't help a bunch with the bat (.284 OBP/.692 OPS), but a good glove. Horwitz is strictly a platoon/bench guy. Neither guy does a lot to improve the team after losing Adames.

If Helsey is gonna be held onto by STL, seems is makes Devin that much more valuable.

From the Bowden proposal, yeah we don’t want Lux so whatever Bowden values him at, let’s replace that .   Id love to deal him to the dodgers but Bobby miller or Sheehan would be my centerpieces however it has to get done.   If not those too, either way, I want only pitching coming back from that pitch rich organization.    River Ryan, Wroblewski, and Knack for Devin and Perkins for example would be to my liking.

Does this take the Phillies out of the running for a Devin Williams trade?

Phillies signed RHP Jordan Romano to a one-year, $8.5 million contract.
The deal is now official. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters at the Winter Meetings that he wouldn’t completely rule out acquiring another reliever, but added that he’s comfortable with the club’s bullpen at this point. The 31-year-old stopper was non-tendered last month by the Blue Jays after missing four months last year due to elbow issues, but he’s expected to be ready for spring training. All signs point to Romano opening next season as Philadelphia’s primary closer.
