3/4 of a billion is mind numbing.

Even crazier that it's with no deferred money. That's a legit $765M. Ohtani signed for $700M but when factoring in deferrals it was around $470M.

I hope the Dodgers and Mets sign everybody. The more they break baseball the more there is a chance the playing field will be leveled. Steve Cohen could hand out 5 of these and still not feel any pain.

When you have a contract that is around the Brewers majority owner's net worth it is a harsh reality on the economics of baseball.

He will use his opt out after 5 most likely if he's still performing like juan soto and that's when Stearns would be wise to let him walk back to the Yankees

Potential to be a good 5 year contract

Potential to be the worst contract ever

Jeez - doesn't this mean that the Yankees and Diamondbacks (losing Bell, Pederson, Walker, Grichuk) now need to sign every decent position player?

Or they need to trade a king's ransom in prospects for "proven" big leafue talent.

It's a good thing the Mets signed David Stearns away from the Brewers, this is exactly the type of shrewd move on the margins of player acquisition he's known for. Nobody else could pull this off.

I don't know that he will exercise that opt out. There are a lot of headwinds on sports revenues at the moment, and in 5 years even if performing he is no longer nearly a unique talent 31 year old DHs don't scream new 10 year mega deal

Dumb league. How is this sustainable. Yes, just keep alienating 4/5 of your fanbases.

I'd say it's more like 7/8 at this point,,,and it is most definitely not sustainable as things are currently constructed financially across MLB.

I was thinking the same thing. Why bother signing a great GM when all he has to do is sign checks? A chimp could have done that. Hell, Sal Bando could have done that. I really hope he doesn't opt out after five years. That will mean the contract isn't worth it.

I'm hoping an over-saturation of guys on 5 teams gets so bad that it becomes more feasible for the top tier of the leftovers to go play in Elon Musk's new league or something. Then fans of the other 26 cities decide that is more fun for them and there is a salary cap etc. Completely unrealistic and ridiculous but I want it to happen.

Eventually, the super teams will have hundreds of millions of dollars committed to players past their prime. I have to believe there’s a tipping point in a few years.

Hopefully the fan base that doesn't follow the super teams doesn't abandon the game before then.

This makes signing Churio an even shrewder move. Got to think there will be more teams signing top end prospects before they hit the majors. That might be a good thing. Players making more during their most productive years should be how the system works.

Another gross black mark on MLB.  When will enough be enough for the have-nots?
