I know there are some here who'd like to snag him (I am not in that group, hate to overpay for a 2 month rental)

The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney reports that “it’s no secret that the Cubs are looking at [Eugenio] Suárez as a potential upgrade at third base.”
Matt Shaw has not performed up to the level that the Cubs hoped for in his rookie season, and Justin Turner can’t be counted on as a full-time third baseman at this stage in his career, so it’s no surprise that the Cubs are looking for a new hitter to man the hot corner. Suárez already has 35 home runs on the season with 85 RBI and a .928 OPS in 98 games this season. He’s a free agent at the end of the season and seems all but assured to be traded at the deadline, with the Cubs and Yankees as the two favorites.

Not letting Cubs get much better offensively in addition to elevating Brewers is the 2 birds 1 stone reason to do it

I'm just hoping Arizona plays their way into WC contention before the deadline and keep Suarez. I don't think the Brewers would pony up to trade for the best rental player on the market and I don't want the Cubs to get him.

I do not understand anyone who wouldn’t love to add Suarez. The Brewers have lots of young controllable talent on the ML roster and a deep farm system. It’s the perfect time to trade from some of that depth - most of those prospects will never become more than replacement level major leaguers anyway. If the bidding gets so high that we’d have to dip into the top 5 or so of the farm system then I would agree that it isn’t worth it. Anything less than that, it should pedal to the metal

Let’s look at this another way. Look the quality of prospects this organization has turned into highly productive big leaguers these last few years. Durbin, Patrick, Myers, Perkins, Collins, etc. None of these guys were even top 15 prospects. This organization has proven to be very good at finding value where other organizations miss it. We can trade away guys like Bitonti, Gasser, Boeve, etc. and be no worse for the wear

We are barely using our bench and are power deficient. Suarez has been a great 2nd half hitter. Our division rival needs him worse than we do. Let’s go make the trade or at least make the Cubs significantly overpay

He's the one guy on the trade market who could vault us into favorites to win a World Series. I think you do whatever it takes to land him.

i kind of agree. as long as do whatever it takes isn't trade away our top prospects in A ball or young arms like Priester, Miz, Henderson

I like how someone else phrased it earlier, definitely have to be involved which at the very least drives the price up. But don't overpay or go overboard for 2 months of a player.  Drive it up so if the Cubs get they have to overpay, and just hope the Yanks end up doing it instead.

Sure the Cubs have been weak at 3B but their offense is so good they should spend their assets on pitching so hope they see that too and the Yanks get him instead.   I think I said it a couple months ago on here that he seems perfect for the Yankees, plus they'd be a team willing/able to pay him in the offseason, so getting now increases your chances of resigning.  Cubs could do I guess but have the Tucker bill coming due this offseason.

I didn't say I wouldn't love to add him, but I fear the cost is going to be way more than we should consider paying.  Which is basically what I said in the original post.  I don't want to overpay for a 2 month rental.

I think if AZ calls us they ask for Logan Henderson, and if we say no to that they call the Cubs, Yankees and Mariners. Maybe Myers can get it done, maybe need a sweetener, but I think they would try to aim higher.

I understand you don’t want to overpay, but an overpay can mean a lot of different things. Like I said in my post, if it takes a Made, Pena, Quero, etc. to get him then I wouldn’t want that either. I would be surprised if the bidding gets that high, but maybe someone throws all the chips in

If they’re overpaying with some other combination of prospects then it’s something the Brewers should aggressively pursue

I think it will be more prudent to go and get Luis Robert for OF help and Rengifo from the Angels for IF help.   Won’t cost any of the names we are worried about and this duo would fit great with us.

Robert Jr. has hit 215/283/364 (80 wRC+) over his last 744 PA. Who is that an upgrade over in our outfield? Perkins is at 236/320/340 (88 wRC+) over 612 PA for his career and doesn't cost $5.75M for the rest of the season, plus a $2M buyout on a $20M option, plus prospects.

Rengifo is one of the worst defensive infielders in MLB...

2B (-6 DRS | -10 FRV) SS (-5 DRS | -9 FRV) 3B (-6 DRS | -14 FRV)

...where does he fit in the Brewers run prevention scheme?

Cant you adjust due to Andrew Vaughn and his outright talent and motivation for a contract?

As for Rengifo, he’s damn solid the past five years and has a record of a solid bat,

Mind you these two aren’t emptying the farm or anything near our top ten prospects to obtain.

What about Robert would help us?  He's an OFer, and a horrible bat.  Everyone we have on our current roster is better, and it isn't even that close.

What does Rengifo do for us?  Horrible fielder, below average bat.  He absolutely does not fit our profile, nor does Robert.

I'd rather sit pat, not do a damn thing, than waste any prospects on either of them.

That is because they are close to useless, and don't help us in any way.

Big PASS.

Hah!  Understood but look at Rengifos positive war the past several years (and it might cost a 30 ish prospect).  And Robert is good just like many White Sox hitters after leaving Comiskey.  If it costs little then yes they both upgrade the team .

It’s weirdly a tight market for bats and he is the biggest realistic get. We certainly have the ammo but I would agree none of the top 5ish prospects. We are deep enough to compete for a 2 month rental without giving up that much. I just really don’t want to get booted in a 3 game series again because bats go cold and we don’t have enough power to match the big money rosters. It’s tough to see at the moment with a winning streak but we still need him.

Maybe Gasser could work, I think he fits their timeline. I think they want pitching but not the low A guys or AAAA fodder like CRod appears to be.

Honestly, I’d probably pay the rate to get Suárez and Lawler for the future.  Trade them Pratt, Henderson, Myers, CRod, Boeve, and Black and see if that works for them.   Seems like a lot they are getting for a third base reset in the offseason.

Are you just copy and pasting the same guys into every single trade now?

Geez.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports the Reds and Diamondbacks have discussed a potential Eugenio Suárez trade.
Feinsand adds that sources have called it “a long shot” that a deal comes together between the two clubs involving Suárez, who is second in the National League with 36 home runs this season. Arizona’s decision to pivot towards the future got a lot easier after they were swept this week in a three-game series against the Astros. Feinsand notes that they’re shopping Suárez, Josh Naylor, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, all of whom are set to reach free agency in the offseason.
