Former Cub Christopher Morel with a 3 run 1st inning HR for the Rays at Wrigley.

Hopefully the Rays won’t do what the Mets did against the Phils last night. They had 4 runs on 5 hits from their first 6 batters then didn’t have another baserunner the rest of the game.

Update: the Rays lead didn’t survive the second inning.  Now 3-3.

Looking for us to get back to playing winning baseball tonight. I hope the off day helped the pitching especially. We need more consistency than showed up in Texas. Of course, bad series happen. Important thing is not to stack them this time of year.

Would love us to rip off a 5-1 homestand, but 4-2 is probably good enough. I'll be hoping for some help against our closest competition, but this is all in our hands.

New, 15-game season. 0-0. Let's go 10-5.

The standings are going to start getting a little uncomfortable if we don’t start winning a little more often. Let’s start tonight, please.

This should have been done and dusted.    You lose tonight and the magic number is still 11 with 14 games to go.    That’s a lot

the thing that can’t happen is starting to happen

Hopefully a day off with another one Monday will help the pitching this weekend and beyond.

But I am more concerned about the hitting. Most of the hitters are either slumping or something short of hot. That makes it hard to string together hits, and that’s reflected in some of the poor RISP performances in the last few weeks.

Is a team with several younger players starting to wear down physically and emotionally from the long season?   If they start to press trying to lock down a division title that many assumed they had won, things could get really ugly.

Cubs manage to win a close one this afternoon. They did have to cover a lot of bullpen innings and face two very difficult pitching matchups this weekend.

None of which matters if we take care of things this homestand.

Agreed, we need to get our run production back on track where we score 6-plus runs per game. Otherwise we may be in trouble.

Cubs win 6-4.

Deadline pickup Kitteredge continues to shine, now in closer’s role.

That makes 13 of 14 games this week involving the Brewers, Cubs, Phillies, or Dodgers that haven’t gone the Brewers way.

I’m beginning to think that counting on other teams to lose is not a good strategy.

Brandon Donovan is off the IL to face the Brewers and Arenado might be back tomorrow or Sunday.

Interesting that everyone is concerned with offensive production except the manager who is sticking with Ortiz despite a better option on the bench. It's wild. 150 games in and he's still hoping he gets hot. 😆

Or the manager considers defense at SS important enough to give Ortiz an edge, and he recognizes Monasterio’s hot streak when he was starting as something that isn’t likely to continue.

Ortiz was hitting well in August before he got hurt. Hopefully he can get back to that.

Yeaaaaaah, hoping Ortiz gets hot--while that would be great--has nothing to do with why he's in the lineup. Barring health or a needed day off, Ortiz will be at SS from now until they're done playing in '25.

We hit well in Texas. That is to say, we got hits.  🤷‍♂️ 🙂

In the last two games of the series, that's absolutely true. The culprit was Texas being able to string together 5-6 good ABs in a row in an inning in each game. In the midst of the disappointment the fact is Texas played & pitched really well. I thought Brian Anderson over-emphasized the rotten batted-ball luck, but it was there to an extent.

Let's remember the cornerstones----run prevention, mixed in with intelligent ABs from the neck up & smart, effective baserunning. When those things cook AND you barrel some balls, we saw the results; two extremely long winning streaks. Preister, Woodruff & Misiorowski performing well this weekend is job one for me.

How would we know? I've never heard of well he's not going to stay hot so I'll just sit him. If this is a new thing I hate it.
