Interesting that the five NL Central teams are in the top nine in positive baserunning

As we got to our seats today for the pirates/Cubs game our seats were next to a nice man in a brewers hat.  I had a nice chat with him, he was only a fan for the last couple of years, mainly because he can't stand the cubs anymore and is a fan in protest (he also had many great things to say about the franchise, farm system, fans, etc).  I am optimistic we can convert more cubs fans over time after today.

almost feel sorry for Harrison. in a normal year, he would be the toast of Wisconsin right now. Now we almost have to explain who he is

He's like Mark Mulder or Cory Lidle on the A's right now when Zito and Hudson got most of the press. But man they both have been amazing.

Last year this time, we hoped Miz could gain his control to reach his TOR ceiling, and we had no idea who Harrison was.  Big change in a year!

Adding these two with our young core of Chourio and Turang and our upcoming prospects is pretty exciting!

So in terms of sheer dominance, which I tend to associate with confidence in winning the game, the only two somewhat similar stretches at this point are the post trade Sabathia performance and Eldred's campaign in 1992. Both had sub 2 ERAs. The other really great seasons by Milwaukee pitchers were all comfortably above 2.

Brewers offense update

no longer last in homers

2nd in obp

8th in ops

tied for 3rd in runs scored …..teams ahead have played fewer games

https://www.mlb.com/stats/team

1st in runs per game
4th in least runs allowed per game

That's a recipe for winning at a .640 clip

For comparison,
Atlanta: 4th in runs/game, 3rd in least runs allowed/game
LAD: 3rd in runs/game, 1st in least runs allowed/game

The Yankees are also top-5 in both categories despite being in 2nd place.

Everyone else belongs in a lower tier for now.

The Brewers once again have the highest opponent error rate. They were first last year, too. This has been talked about a lot - while luck surely plays a part, the Brewers tend to put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses which is why they consistently see themselves at the top of this list.

true but that tends not to hold up in the playoffs

I think there should be an earned error rate stat. While that sounds counter intuitive it really isn't. In a game where some teams/players force more action than others it stands to reason the ones that do will create more errors. Take base stealing for example. If the league average error rate on stolen bases is 1 out of every 50 attempts a team that attempts 100 steals would expect to see 2 errors. A team that attempts 200 steals would expect to see 4. Simply attempting to steal more bases should earn a team more errors.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Not sure that’s true, but.willing to be convinced. I think the Brewers played 7 playoff games last year - that probably isn’t enough data to say it’s meaningfully different than what is established over 162. But it stands to reason that playoff opponents play better defense, too.

The Brewers have the 2nd best record in baseball. We must be the most talented because I read how many mistakes our manager makes each game.

When it comes to knowing if we got an ace or not, I often defer to the immortal words of the great Janine Melnitz

Watching Miz pitch is insane. He isn’t just blowing 103 past hitters and hoping they miss it. He is genuinely dotting the corners and locating his breaking stuff. Of his 15 strikeouts, every single one of them was on a pitch on the edge or just off except the one to end the game which was just inside the zone. The fastball gets all the hype, but every game he is casually dotting strike 3 off speed pitches.

Miz could be throwing 95mph and he would still be pitching like an ace.
