Potential trades...

Brewers trade Pena/Drohan/Payne would you rather get Skubal as a rental or Miller for three plus years??

I'm not crazy about giving up Pena for a rental, but Skubal isn't an ordinary rental IMO. Miller is clearly the best relief pitcher in the game right now and you could always flip him to recoup prospect capital in 2-3 years.

It also thinks Detroit needs to add something to Skubal for Jett Williams so I say it's brilliant.

It's an interesting trade deadline this year. 

 

3 teams were supposed to be good but fell flat and are essentially in fire sale mode. Mets giants Tigers. Lots of interesting players there. Most on expensive contracts, but not all. Many will get gobbled up by the Dodgers and Yankees for small prospect costs. 

 

Then the bottom feeder teams. I count 5. Royals As angels Reds Rockies. Not many great players there but more sellers is better. 

 

Finally there are quite a few retool teams who are on the bubble and will likely try to trade for this year and the next few years. MLB talent going both ways. Probably about half the league falls into this category. Nats Mariners Marlins Padres Astros are a few standouts with lots of interesting players and looking to be active. 

 

Here's hoping for a lot of activity.

Baseball could use more big-leaguer for big-leaguer trades like the Early for Mead trade. That's why I like the idea of using the 20th-26th guys on the roster as trade possibilities. Try to balance out the roster/lineup a little bit better for the playoffs, AND to prepare for a much different roster in '27-'28.

Brewers pick up Musgrove’s 2027 $20M salary in its entirety.  Padres cover 2026.

With Skubal gone I think that leaves Detmers, Holmes or Gausman as possible fits for the Brewers.  There are others but I think these are the top 3 for the Brewers right now.  If it only costs Wilken and some international bonus pool money or a DSL lottery ticket for Holmes sure do that trade but I think the Mets will be looking for something more.  Detmers will probably cost the most but I think the Brewers could get him for something like Adams, Coleman Crow and a DSL lottery ticket.  

Gausman is harder to gauge on if he will be available or not.  The Blue Jays are not really out of it for a final AL Wild Card spot but they aren't really in it either.  I think a similar package as what the Angels will be looking to get for Detmers will be close to what the Brewers will have to pay for him.  

The trade market should pickup now that Skubal is gone.  If I could get the Reds to part with Greene I would send over Pena in the deal but the supporting pieces would be less.  The Mariners would make a good trading partner but I think they are looking for someone who could help them next year or this year so I don't think there is a fit there.  Pena for one of their starters would work the best but I'm not sure the Mariners would be interested in that.  Maybe this is where you could convince someone to take on Frelick something like Frelick, Adams and Crow for Kirby.  I'm not sure if that is too much or not enough.  I guess it depends on your valuation of Frelick and Adams and also of Kirby.

Add Mize to the list, especially with Detroit waving the white flag. Peralta for a plan B type. Padres will want too much for Miller, maybe next year as we also look to unload someone like Turang.

I haven’t heard much talk on here about Foster Griffen. I think he is someone the brewers should consider as a rental.

On the heels of Skubal to the Dodgers, I wouldn’t make any major moves (Miller etc.). There is no reason to chase the Dodgers this year. Save the prospects and hope other owners have a spine in the offseason to cause a lockout if change doesn’t happen.

No telling what will happen with the 2027  season.

The way I look at it, in the postseason Brewers could get far by improving relief pitching. The starting pitching is good, and shorter starts are less of an issue when your A bullpen can pitch basically every game. With Skubal gone, there also aren't really any starters who are a clear upgrade. And starters, especially with control remaining, are expensive. 

Adrian Morejon (If the Padres are selling) and Luke Weaver would be ideal IMO. There are other names out there, but those would be among the best relievers who might be available. Having a lead in the 5th and getting to close it out with Morejon, Weaver, Uribe, Megill sounds like a good plan to me. A rental reliever, even a very good one, won't require a true top prospect. Weaver has another year of control, but is paid near market rate so doesn't add a ton of value or cost. 

Adding another starter to help get the team to the postseason could also be a good idea, but I wouldn't shop at the very top of the market for that. A Freddy reunion if the price is right perhaps.

The starter addition is as much a priority as the bullpen upgrades, imo.

Crow is really the only realistic starter possibility in the uppers and he’s coming off injury and shouldn’t be counted on. I’d like to see 2 starter additions so we can option Sproat, gaining the extra year while he gets experience pitching out of the pen for Nashville so he can strengthen our postseason pen. The second starter addition protects from injury and allows for 5 and 6 day rest for our young starters the rest of the way.

I’m hoping for Weaver. His addition along with Drohan and Sproat moving to the pen would give us a dynamic playoff pen.
