How many were actually relieved? I was surprisingly relieved.

I wanted  a controlled pitcher back without the injury history this season. And still am glad we are not parting with some of our young starters. 

On the other hand, we could have beat this offer rather easily. We are not deep with top milb pitching. And that hurt a bit, I’m guessing.

The Henderson/Drohan talk was always concerning to me as well.  As good as our system is, it's fairly light on pitching and young starters with MLB success are not easily found, even if we've somehow been finding them.

The Dodgers arent deep with top milb pitching either - they just see their young pitching prospects blow their arms out and then have the luxury of allowing them to take forever and a day to resume pitching and hype them up enough for teams to think they're great prospects.

 

Both Ryan and Smith aren't setting the world on fire this season in the minors and both are coming off major arm injuries.

I was really relieved, but still pissed it had to be the Dodgers of all teams.  I pretty much had already talked myself into it being the Dodgers, but it still angers me anyway.

I'm relieved that we still have all those top prospects, even if only for another day I guess.

I really hope we don't do anything stupid now to try and counter the Dodgers.

I'd prefer to roll with what we have, and see what happens.  Trading top prospects for tier 2 players won't narrow the gap enough imo.

What good does it do to add Mason Miller now when we may never be in the situation to win vs the Dodgers in a playoff game anyway.

Maybe the Brewers should call the Dodgers and ask if Glasnow is available - dude is getting paid close to $30M a year and he just lost his spot in the postseason rotation.

Picking up a starter is still a goal, I hope. They need innings covered with all these young SP’s innings going up.

The only consolation is that if we manage to upset them in the playoffs it would be an all time triumph. And we are still set up to be really good for a long time to come.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see the Dodgers announce a mega deal extension for Skubal before the end of this league year....typically that would never happen with a Boras client in a free agent year - but skubal may want to cash in a super long, guaranteed contract with the team he'll probably sign with eventually, and who knows when a new CBA will be signed along with what free agent contract parameters will be in it?

My favorite part of the trade is that it happened tonight and so it saves us 2 full days of having to dance around it. 

I know the pipe dream scenarios all just transfer now to Mason Miller... But this saves about 9 pages of comments on the deadline day thread.

Yep. I agree with it all. 
If we win it all this year, it will be more impressive than their last three combined.

Miller is going no where the Padres are back in the playoff hunt for the final WC spot in the NL as they are only 1 game behind the Phillies for the last spot.

I don’t see the Padres selling anything as they could be tied with the Phillies by Monday or still just one or two games back.

I agree and even if the Padres were selling we are not trading for Mason Miller. I'm just saying removing Skubal from the pool helps quell some of the noise in the coming days.

I'm not sure why people don't believe McCalvy. He didn't just pull those names out of a hat. It's not like he just said they gave up prospect number X, Y, and Z. In terms of actual prospect similarities what he put out feels pretty comparable. An MLB ready SP, a top 25/50 position player, and a 21 year old SP prospect whose timeline is still a couple years away. It wouldn't at all surprise me if that was what the Tigers were asking for.

Ryan is really good mind you he is ramping up from tj and a hamstring deal

Reminds me a bit of being disappointed when David Cone went to Toronto in 1992.  Yet, we got opportunity yet to make a better deal here. And again I’m sort of glad this deal wasn’t made considering the price that would have been paid if it was Henderson, Pena, and Letson.

Funny how the mind works, but I immediately thought about just bringing up Made and Fischer NOW and roll with it.  And the line from Fresh Prince was in my random thoughts too…hadn’t watched the show in years…”Geoffrey, break out Lucille!”

I also wonder how much of it simply was Skubal wanting to go to LA and not wanting to go elsewhere.
