The Brewers aren’t going to give up on Sproat, and that’s a good thing. Corbin Burnes was even worse in 2019 than Sproat has been this year and then we all know what happened. Of course I’m not saying Sproat will win a Cy Young or anything like that, but he’s not going to be DFAed. He should be done this year, though, and I hope the Brewers have an excellent sports psychologist to work with him extensively this offseason.

Dont let Sproat’s outing get you down. I highly doubt he will be a part of the team the rest of the year. Uribe’s outing was a bit troubling, but I prefer giving up 2 hits in his situation over walking two guys to begin the inning like Sproat did. The main reason we feel uneasy after tonight is a guy who will throw 0 pitches in the playoffs this year. 
 

The magic number for the division is 5 now. It’s mathematically possible for the Brewers to clinch this weekend.

This was actually a terrific night. You found out Brandon Sproat isn't going to help you in October, and it didn't cost you a win to find that out. With a 7-run lead & wanting to give your primary people in the BP (outside of Romero) two days off, I get giving him rope until he walked in a run. But you certainly can argue he should've been pulled after the 3rd walk. It's just painful to see the moment being too big for someone when they have that big of a lead, and it clearly did get too big. Like I said, you found something out while still winning. I'll take this over scaring someone in the 9th & still going home with an L. Sproat will probably be a Nashville Sound next year, and they'll continue to work with him. It's what you do with guys who have an arm like that.

I thought, and Murphy mentioned in the presser, that once getting a big lead we put up some lazy ABs. That's something that shouldn't happen, even if the game ended 8-1. Lesson learned, hopefully.

Did we ever sweep these guys in a home series & a road one, in the same season?

I’m sorry but, yes, people complained about certain players like Ortiz because half of his game contribution work was missing (hitting). His defense is elite at least! But, when all you are expected to do is throw strikes as a pitcher, there is no other half to your game to say helps the team. It’s the same reason that our complaints about the low production DH like Yelich has been much of the second half is justified. He has no other game helping role. 
Sproat should be toast.

Corbin Burnes had way worse results but he flashed substantially more upside than Sproat has ever flashed. Just look at a comparison of the underlying numbers. 

Burnes had a 3.37 xFIP, 21.3% K-BB, and 17.2% swinging strike rate in 2019.

Sproat not counting today had a 4.29 xFIP, 12.6% K-BB, and 10.3% swinging strike rate this year.

I know you said you aren't comparing them that deeply but I would caution people to think that just because Burnes turned it around that Sproat will also be able to do it. Sproat has significantly less skill to work with than Burnes did.

Abner had a really good year prior to that injury shortened 2024. 

Burnes who often gets his name thrown out when talking about Sproat showed what he could do at his best in 2018 before everything fell apart for him in 2019. 

Sproat has never had any success in MLB to know that he can. It’s all hope and projection. Some said at the beginning of the season that we would need Sproat at some point — we didn’t, thank goodness. 

Could he still figure it out? Sure. Is it more likely that he’s just going to be one of the many names that MLB is littered with who had the tools but never amounted to anything? Yes,

As a 23 & 24-yr-old, Nolan Ryan averaged between 6.5 & 7 walks per nine innings. This isn't to suggest Brandon Sproat is another Nolan Ryan, rather to say that if a HOF pitcher can struggle early in his career, Brandon Sproat certainly can. Personally, I have serious questions as to whether he can get the command & poise under control. But the organization certainly isn't giving up on an arm like his, save for a trade.

Stop, that’s just not true. One single guy threw out a Tyrone Taylor comparison when discussing Chourio and his success so far and was pretty much shut down/corrected by everyone else. No one ever wanted Taylor over Chourio.

Depends on what you mean by really good. Abner had control problems. So did Freddy in the beginning. So does Sproat. 

Sproat has a pretty good fastball and a very good slider. He had one good inning tonight, then completely lost the strike zone. I'm not saying he'll be good someday. But he might. They'll work with him.
