Gwynn and Nix to be up on Monday

Whoop-dee-freakin-doo. There is almost literally no reason for both of these guys to be up here. I'm confused, unless we have room for a 2nd 'exclusively pinch-runner' guy, and another 'exclusively d' guy. Why we do or would have 3 guys to fill 1.5 or 2 spots is beyond me. Not that that's saying much, though...

Having them up here could be helpful. It could be one of those situations where maybe we pinch hit for the pitcher with Nix and instead of the opposing team laughing at us they bring in a LOOGY and instead we send up Dillon. We don't waste a guy like Gross to pull him back when they put in a lefty. Plus it gives us a reason to not play Mench against righties... but that will happen even if we had all left handed bats on the bench and Mench, lol.

At this point I really don't see either getting much playing time unless the standing drastically change.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Definitely not a lot of playing time, but they are likely to be significant in our playoff chase. If gwynn is healthy I'd assume he'll see time as a defensive replacement. It's too bad we didn't have a slick gloveman for second base otherwise I wouldn't mind seeing en mass substitutions on defense when we got up by 3 or more runs. 3rd, 2nd, and CF and LF depending on who was in the line-up. And as someone else alluded to I'd much rather have either of these guys facing a right handed pitcher than Mench.

At least we'll get to see the vaunted bat of Laynce Nix that people around here have been pining for.

Seriously, no harm in bringing either of these guys up since they have room on the roster. Gwynn is great defensively, and can be used as a pinch runner, etc. Nix...I dunno that he'll get to do a lot, other than go into the outfield late in games.

Just as long as Gross doesn't lose his playing time to Gwynn (again) this can be beneficial. Both these guys can play some good OF defense - guys like Hart or Gross shouldn't need to be playing CF in the 8th inning of a one run game anymore.

No harm done here. Gwynn looked close to healthy last night, but I notice he really didn't run too much or spring in warm ups and he had one chopper that he didn't beat out that he's beat out in the past. Good luck to Laynce! He had a power stroke going the end of the Sounds year, but struggle a big with his avg.

It's certainly beneficial if we were to have a game go to extras at this point, as it provides additional options for PR'ing late or pinch hitting instead of having to let someone like Stetter PH in the 14th in a crucial game.

It makes sense, because if you put the two of them together it's like you get one good hitter. Gwynn has no power; Nix can't get on base. Of course they're both strong defenders. So if you need a baserunner in a LH PH situation, you can hit Gwynn; if you need a homer, you can hit Nix, and either one can stay in the game and upgrade you defensively. I'm glad the Brewers aren't being shy about filling up the bench and bullpen with useful role-players, however specialized the role might be.

Look at it this way. If we've already used Stocker in the 8th, and Estrada singles to lead off the 9th when we're down a run, we'll be very happy that Gwynn and/or Nix is available.

Man, with some people you just mention the name Tony Gwynn and you need to look out because you don't know whats being thrown in your direction. Seriously, we have two extra players and nobody is being sent down. Assuming he's completely healthy, I think Gwynn is probably our best outfielder, and even though i never liked Nix, he does have some power which could come in handy later in games.

Guess I over-reacted, but it wasn't really anger about Gwynn, I never even focused just on him, but I understand it can't really hurt with roster expansion. My reaction was that both of them are coming up, which -given Stocker- made me confused as to whether or not there was a need. "Need" turns out to not be the case, so, meh....can't hurt.

Greg.

Nix gets on base at least as well as Jenkins and Hall and is an above average center fielder.

OBP: Jenkins .329 - Hall .320 - Nix .329 - Hart .352 - Gross .351 - Mench .307 - Gwynn .344.

Jenkins 2007 OBP: .329

Hall 2007 OBP: .320

Nix Career OBP: .277

Needless to say, I disagree. He's never had an OBP above .300 in the Majors.

And your stats fail to mention that Nix' .329 is at NASHVILLE.

Except that Ned almost went through his entire bench last week in a 9-inning game. Nashville's done - these guys may not have much use in Milwaukee, but they have NO use sitting at home, and if Milwaukee had come back to go into extra innings they would have come in handy. They are in a playoff race - you cannot be unprepared for any scenario.
