Hands down it's Nite Owl off Layton Ave. I have yet to find a burger that comes close. Meet the challenge of a double cheeseburger, fries and a shake and you've become a man. Solidly in second place is a Kopp's burger. I live in Madison and there is no place here that can hold a candle to Nite Owl or Kopp's. Not even Dotty's, which is probably Madison's best burger joint.

Wendy's Baconator does the trick for me. For a local place, Sobelmans on St. Paul is my favorite in the Milwaukee area.
Everything I've ever known, I've learned from Brewerfan.net....Seriously though

As far as non-fast food, I love those greasy ones they serve at Kroll's in Green Bay

Booches in Columbia Missouri are also fantastic

There's a small local chain (about 4 locations) in SF called BurgerMeister that I'm also a sucker for

Double Cheddar Butter Burger for me

Love those

There is this small place called Vinchi's that's inside a bar and they make this incredible steak and cheese sandwich that's really just a big burger and it's truly amazingly good. It's is though for those watching their weight a pounds putting on killer given all the cheese/butter on it.

Non-chain: http://www.milwaukeesbestburgers.com/

The link says it all, hand down Sobelman's, blows everything else I have ever had out of the water (I'm looking at you Kopp's)

Best fast food $1 burger: Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger

Best fast food "special" burger: Angry Whopper

Best fast food everyday burger: Whopper

Chain: I really like the Royal at Red Robin

Other notes: I will never eat White Castle again for the remainder of my life. I was very under-whelmed with Sonic in KC, but need to give the one here a chance.

- Kroll's in GB

- 4x4, animal style, at In & Out Burger

- Anything at Fuddrucker's

- Dave's Favorite at Famous Dave's

I know In & Out has a "secret" menu, and I know about the 3x3 and 4x4, but what does "animal style" mean? I have a bet with a friend for a meal (I win if the Brewers lose less than 100 games, easy bet I know). Just wondering what I'm gonna be eating someday.

The meat is cooked and fried with mustard and then pickles

Double double with cheese animal style from In N Out wins hands down. It is not even a contest and isn't close.

I do like the Sourdough Jack from the Jack in the Crack.

The fried egg option from Fatburger is great too.

My Madison favorites

Weary Traveler's "Bob's Bad Breath Burger" is outstanding

Old Fashioned, the #30 is awesome

Dotty's Dumpling Dowry is also very good.

The Spot in Kenosha also has great Burgers, although I'm not sure if there still open.

Favorite Fast food - BK Bacon double cheese burger

I think there was a thread like this a year or two ago.

This is going to sound odd, but I really enjoy McDonalds Hamburgers. I have never been a big fan of the "big and juicy" type hamburgers that have sauces dripping out of them and things falling out every time you try to take a bite. I like a drier, smaller burger.

The Royal Red Robin burger with BBQ sauce substituted for the mayo is the best I have had outside of MKE (Sobelman's). It has cheese, an egg, and bacon on it...just awesome.

Tom's Drive-In's in the Fox Valley are about the only fast food place I'll go to get a burger from when I am at home. A&W is pretty good too.

In order of awesomeness:

1. Kopp's

2. Mazo's (Off 27th and Oklahoma)

3. Soberlman's

I'm not a big burger guy in general but I LOVE those three places/burgers.

The Great Dane's Brat and Bacon Pretzel Burger - brat patty and burger patty served with bacon and cheddar cheese on a soft pretzel bun - I am going to be eating one of these in a few hours

Red Robin Blue Ribbon Burger

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I really prefer Culver's to In-n-Out

If I could somehow get a meal of a Culver's butterburger, In-n-Out animal-style fries, and then some Kopp's frozen custard for dessert, I'd be a happy man

I am also a fan of the Nite Owl. My grandma used to take me there as a kid for burgers and malts. I used to like Kopp's but the last few times I had their burgers they were way too greasy and not very good. I am a burger lover and actually Texas Roadhouse has very, very good burgers. If anyone is ever in Eau Claire, Mogie's Pub on Water St. has excellent burgers. I have to try Sobelman's. And I like 5 Guys too for a fast food burger.

The greasiness is the reason I don't eat Kopp's burgers anymore. I feel like I'm going to die of a heart attack afterwards... I don't know why I didn't mention Monk's in the Dells earlier, but I was basically raised on those. But you have to go to the one downtown, not the new one out by the interstate... I think all of the years of burgers being cooked have created some sort of secret spice that makes them oh so good...
