2011-05-11 Padres (Stauffer) at Brewers (Wolf) - [Brewers lose, 13-6]

This has been brutal since the moment I saw the lineup.

RR seems to have a better relationship with the players than Macha did. That is the only nice thing that I can say at this point.

If we can hold it at 5-0 there is still plenty of time to come back.

Maybe, if we could hit as good as the Padres!

Although have we come from behind to win a game at all this year? Normally I would say maybe we're due for one, but the reason is our approach turns to trash as soon as we get behind. Everyone gets instantly frustrated and starts hacking for the fences. Craig Counsell is the only one smart enough to go to the plate and just try to not make an out and get to the next hitter.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Been discussed ad nauseum but Nieves has no place on any MLB roster. Man I can't stand him.
He only gets labeled a defensive catcher because his offense is so terrible.

Mark Kotsay and Wil Nieves shouldn't even be starting in Nashville right now.

It's a somewhat small sample considering he doesn't play every day but Nieves is currently batting .147. He has a grand total of THREE hits since opening day, when he had two.

In a stunner, Wolf gives up 2 line drives singles with one out and they pull him from the game. Good thing we let him hit last inning.

It's a tough decision to pull the plug on a starter early, but when the roster currently has 18 or so pitchers on it with several who can play the mop-up role, why will RR wait to make a change until the game's completely out of reach? This lineup isn't going to make George Webb fear cheap burgers.
Studies have shown that on average, starters who get rocked early do not perform worse than expected going forward. I'm sure many will find that hard to believe but it's true.

If Wolf has his velocity (which isn't saying much) and nothing else seems wrong with him physically, I don't think we should expect him to continue pitching below his normal expectations. And since his normal expectations (4.24-4.5 ERA?) are better than any of the long relief guys we have available, so he's probably our best bet.

That's my reasoning at least. And there's been a semi-recent trend (5-10 years) to NOT yank SP when they struggle early, so I think the league generally agrees. Of course, SP pitcher performance degrades as the game goes on, so a 4.5 ERA SP might perform more like a 5.0 one in the 5th. For that reason, I don't have an issue pulling a 3/4 SP type guy like Wolf after 75ish innings.

i'm trying to think of some name combination that would say Randy Wolf is our next Jeff Suppan. maybe just "he stinks!" is appropriate enough.

I would assume you weren't saying this a couple of weeks ago when Randy was pitching awesome.

The Padres had their season high hit total last night. They've already matched last night's total today.

Talk about not letting reality get in the way of a personal bias. He pitched well on the balance last year and has a 4.11 ERA this year. He probably won't be worth his salary in the last year of his contract but he's been fine with the Brewers so far.

Randy Wolf has not earned a very long leash for himself by constantly complaining about his catcher, or by cashing a $10M/year paycheck...

Their starting lineup last night had five of nine guys hitting under the Uecker line. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Pretty funny how Cory was complaining about the strike called on McGehee when gameday says it was a strike and also says pitches 1 and 3 were strikes but called balls.
