TV treasures who are still with us (and some now sadly saying goodbye since this thread began)

Posted

Mel Brooks is still with us. Age 97. Probably his greatest film is Blazing Saddles - which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Many people don't realize that Richard Pryor wrote the script with Brooks (and others), and he was supposed to star in the film. But the studio thought he was too controversial. Thankfully, Cleavon Little was awesome.

Sort of.  The studio thought that Pryor's history of drug arrests made him uninsurable and they refused to finance the film with him as the star.

The first person they offered the other leading role (Gene Wilder's character) was... John Wayne.  He declined, feeling that it was a bit too controversial for his image.  They gave it to Gig Young, who subsequently collapsed during his first scene from alcohol withdrawal.  Which was a good thing, because five years later Young killed his wife in a murder-suicide.  Gene Wilder was a "call to the bullpen".

Brooks is also the only starring actor from the film still alive (some minor characters are still alive).

That's crazy, I think Wayne would have nailed that role. He was making a lot of bad movies in the 70's and that could have been a outside the box late career classic for him. Not surprised at all he would turn it down though, but I can see why they wanted him for it.

I have the DVD set of Land of Lost. Used to play it for my son.

I did the exact same thing for both of my kids, they loved it!

That whole era of comedians was incredible. Time Conway, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, Betty White. Some of the best ever and their comedy still works today.

In December of 2013, I made the initial post in this "TV treasures who are still with us" thread.

We lost Peter Marshall of Hollywood Squares fame this week at age 98.

In that initial linked post, I placed in bold 28 names when I wrote it.

Almost 11 years later, only three of the 28 survive. Not a surprise, since most were already 90 or older back in 2013.

Without posting here and doing a quick Google/Wikipedia search, see if you can quickly identify the three.

I'm on the youngest edge of the Baby Boomer generation, so for me, it's thanks for the memories to all.
