2015 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Alright so who should we hope for now? Seems like a lot of guys are falling, I'm guessing we won't draft many of them. Anyone see any steals left at this point? Gotta be getting kinda thin I would think as we're into 5th round of players.

 

MLB has Donny Everett, Justin Hooper, Luken Baker, Cole Sands and Kyle Molnar as the top left.

Did Donny Everett get drafted yet? I know he's a tough sign with his commitment to Vandy, but would be an interesting pick nonetheless.

Why did the Cardinals get an end of 3rd round supplemental pick? Only team to do so?

Donny Everett, Justin Hooper and Luken Baker made it clear before the draft that it would take a truckload of money to sign. You can be sure all 3 are heading to college.

There is no player in the 2015 class that has improved more over the last two years than Canadian outfielder Demi Orimoloye.

 

Orimoloye's athleticism has always been obvious. He's a chiseled and natural 6-foot-4, 225-pounds and exudes strength. He also ran a 6.57 60-yard dash as a sophomore and has a solid average outfield throwing arm. But dating back to his appearances at the 2013 PG Junior National Showcase and the 2013 PG Underclass All-American Games, it was very difficult to project that Orimoloye would ever be able to hit.

 

These are notes from the Perfect Game database from that summer that are consistent with the entire body of his evaluations at that time:

 

BP:Upright/narrow stance, unsure trigger, late start, VERY raw, big loop in back, huge hand drop load, zero balance, big uppercut, can imagine him crushing the ball if he ever learned to hit, but has a LONG way to go. Game: completely overmatched, had absolutely no chance in game ABs.

 

Fast forward a year to last summer and it was like watching a different player, admittedly still a very large, fast and strong player, in the batter's box. There was balance and timing, there was a much shorter and level path to the ball, there was an explosion of hands and wrists at contact. And there was consistently a huge explosion of barrel and ball at contact. Orimoloye made some of the hardest contact of the summer and made it consistently.

 

Reports coming in the spring indicated that Orimoloye has continued to hit the same way off college and even professional pitching as part of Team Canada's March tour through Florida.

 

This would be looking well into the future but should Orimoloye eventually reach the big leagues, he would become the first native born Nigerian Major Leaguer. He immigrated to Canada with his family as a three-year old.

Switch hitting SS - contact bat, not a ton of power. Projects as a utility guy or 2b according to MLB guys. Seems like the first relatively safe, easy sign pick.

Blake Allemand is a ballplayer. Gritty but small (5-10 175). Projects more as a Utility guy

A small guy, but he had a .430 OBP this past season with more walks (38) than K's (21) and some pop with 7 HRs. Not exactly a defensive whiz though (18 errors).

Okay was for a failed signing last season. Surprised that was only one for 3rd round.

I think Demi is my favorite pick so far. He could be the Brewers version of Antetokounmpo. Raw but has all the tools. Sweet.

Demi Orimoloye reads like another Lorenzo Cain, there are so many reasons to like this pick I can already tell he's going to be a personal favorite of mine.

Brewers should get Giannis to call Orimoloye and tell him how awesome it is to be a Nigerian-born emigre athlete in Milwaukee.

 

Brewers seem to be pushing against orthodoxy in these last two drafts. Last year: sidearmer, big shortstop, raw guy. This year: golf-grip hitter, a couple of injury-dropped pitchers, another raw guy. Seems like a very conscious strategy for pursuing upside.

Fun fact, last year's 5th round pick DeMuth had the second smallest 5th round signing bonus of any pick ($50K; CLE gave their pick $20K). So we can probably estimate that Allemand will get somewhere around $50K.

I like these top five picks. Allemand, I think, is a huge sleeper. I'll admit, I am a bit of a sucker for switch-hitters - especially ones who show a little pop - going back to Dale Sveum. (Back in 1988, I was rooting for the Brewers to use some combo of Molitor at third or second, Sveum at third base or second base, and Sheffield at shortstop - I wanted them to move Gantner and get both the bats of Sveum and Sheffield in the lineup).
