MAGIC # THREAD

Back in the year of our Lord 2011, the fine posters of Brewerfan.net had a beautiful thread dedicated to the Crew's magic number. I was unable locate that thread and resurrect it. So this will have to do. I lack the skills many of the talented folks here do. I'm hoping others can get this party started!! (Sadly, I'm really less talented than I intended to be. I can't even manage to post a picture of Zach Grienke, Jeff D'Mico, or even the freaking Salad man. No #13 for me)

I'll go with the clinching a playoff spot number for now, we can switch it to the division number WHEN we catch the Cubs for 1st place ;)

Some magic number housekeeping, is this the magic number for a playoff spot or for the first (home) wild card spot?

Looks like the magic number for a playoff spot is at 5 (Link).

Not just “at Night” anymore.

At 87-66, the Brewers scenarios go like this:

6 for 2nd wild card. Colorado wins out, could get to 92-70, so Brewers need 6 to get to 93.

7 for the first wild card. Cards win out, would be 93-69.

13 for the division as of Thursday morning. Cubs go 6-4, Brewers need to go 9-0.

5-5, 8-1

4-6, 7-2

3-7, 6-3, but this brings the Cardinals back into play for the division at this point, so I will stop. Especially since the Cubs going 3-7 would be most likely predicated by getting swept by the Cardinals.

So were 5 from at least a play in game and 12 from a division tie as well.

The Cardinals and Cubs finishing against each other is nice in that it will either make getting the home game wild card game easier (if Cubs win that series) or make a possible division title possible (if STL does). I love meaningful baseball.

So is the magic # to clinch a playoff spot 5 or 6? I’m confused.

I was looking at the wrong thing, and had 5 in my head. 6 looks like right number.

The most games the Rockies can win is 92. So the Brewers need to win 5 to tie for the last wild card spot, 6 to take it outright assuming the Rockies win out.

So I'd say the way most people think about it the magic number to clinch a spot is 6. I'm not really sure why that link above is saying 5.

I think tiebreakers factor in too. The Crew holds the one over CO. So if the MN is 6 over CO, it is 5 in the sense that a tie would enable us to host a game 163....

I would calculate it at 6, bit if we are just talking about ensuring one "post-season" game at MP, then it is 5.

Agree - it's 6. Five only extends the season (a one-game playoff to reach the Wild Card game would be counted as a regular season game).

It would be really lousy magic if it only meant you tied for a playoff spot. Let's not muddy it with a number that would end up in a tie. I don't want a "Tied for 2nd Wild Card" banner next year.

As of now, it's:

5 for a wild card

6 for the first wild card.

11 for the division.
