Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2019

I'm 31 and it was always a TYME machine for me because there was one right by us and whenever my mom had to run errands before we were old enough to stay home alone she would always go there. Big block lowercase TYME letters so 6-8 year old me always thought it was just called a TYME machine and that's where you got money from.

It's a shame Najeh Davenport and Tim Couch were never teammates in Cleveland. It would have made for some confusing Sundays in local senior centers. Also given his notorious transgression, Davenport playing for the Browns would have been hilarious.

Did you post this in 2005 and it just showed up now?

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I just think flip flops are stupid anyways. No ankle support, uncomfortable, and they lead to stinky, ugly feet. Even more amazing is anyone paying more than $10 for a pair.

Ya I don't know why anyone would wear them anywhere other than the beach or pool. Other than that I just find it inappropriate.

I agree to all of this. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. Also, they were thongs when I was a kid. You can add locker room along with beach/pool.

It's heartening to see that we have multiple 52-year-olds here at Brewerfan. Though I know 53 is looming close for at least a couple of us.

Yup, let's get you a new pair of thongs at Kmart. Those super cheap rubbery flip flops always make me think of Kmart.

Also, TYME machine for life. My mom used to stock two of Monroe's four TYME machines with cash in the early 80s. :)

The Westminster dog show is sponsored by Purina. Which is funny because no dog owner in that show would ever feed their dog Purina dog food.

The SO and I have never done much for Valentine's Day. It's about halfway between our birthdays and I for one see no reason to rev up the gift giving in consecutive months (or for my birthday, an 11 day period).

However, SO scheduled his (routine) colonoscopy for today and I'm thinking geez, I don't think we have to double down this hard on our general disinterest in the quasi-holiday. :rolleyes

Pretty much the same for my wife and I (well, except neither of us scheduled any type of medical procedure for today). Valentines is also about half way in between our b-days, exchanging cards is about the extent of what we do. Had to laugh at the 11 day birthday thing as this is also a running joke for us. For several days before and after my birthday I will say "But it's my birthday" in response to any chore or topic that I may not be exactly thrilled about around the house.

Appleton's parking regulations have to change. Today the only parking spot available was in a spot that said 1 hour parking only. I only to be there for 15 minutes. Why the hell should I have to wait another 45 minutes before I can leave?

kind of an off-shoot of hawing's comment...my fiancé and I don't celebrate either. She tells me there are a lot of cheaper days to buy flowers.

But I find it funny that we have such major tension in the US over open displays of religious sentiment around Christmas, but we don't have any tension over religious sentiment about St. Valentine's Day.

Probably because there isn't any open display of religious sentiment for valentine's day?

Most of what is seen with Christmas is trees, Santa, and happiness. but you could be right.

It was suggested to me that I create Venmo account to allow people to pay for Girl Scout cookies from their phone, so I did so. While it's super easy to use and very convenient, I don't understand why it tells me who else my friends (which I cannot undo, apparently) pay and what they pay them for. I don't care that my friend that lives across the country paid someone I don't know for dog walking. Why does a payment app have to have a social media feel to it?

I'm approaching my official 10 year BFverssary this June and that's not including all the lurking I did before I signed up. Where has the time gone?

Are we supposed to send flowers or something? :laughing

I'd settle for a (world series) ring!

Good Morning, BF Friends -

A serious question on workplace protocol:

Last night, the father of one of my direct reports passed away. I’m a fairly new manager. My team is composed of a few guys in their 20s plus me (age 33). I’m working with HR to confirm our bereavement leave policy and check on any other benefits for which my colleague may be eligible. I plan on circulating a sympathy card and a cash collection within our department. I’ll also share the visitation details once they are known. Is there anything else I can or should do to help him through this difficult time?

I'm always unsure about to handle these situations too. My opinion, I would collect the cash and then buy flowers and have them sent to the funeral home along with the card that comes with the flowers from your team. (Rather than give your employee a card with cash.)

Other than the official HR stuff, about all you can do beyond that is a sincere "Anything at all I can do to help?"
