Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2019 - 20: BIG TEN CHAMPS & BPI NCAA Champs!

It is true that usually Wisconsin has developed an All-Conference type player from merely okay recruits. We have to go all the way back to....LAST YEAR to find the last time that Happened. Potter and Reuvers aren't going to get those kinds of accolades this year, but each could easily reach that plateau next year.

Gard's seat would just be getting warm if they flopped this year AND if the recruits coming in didn't show a lot of promise. Instead it's the exact opposite. They should/could have a better team next year. The year after that they'll be a super young and hopefully very talented team that I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up to be quite good, but really it's a transition/growth year. Evaluate Gard again in April of 2023. Until then he should get all the support from the fanbase. I'm guessing at that time they'll be finishing up 5 straight Tourney appearances with a couple Sweet Sixteen+ runs, and Gard will be nearly cemented in as a lifer who will contend for conference titles nearly every year.

I don't know much of anything about basketball recruiting, but doesn't it seem odd that King didn't visit Nebraska and apparently will not visit Nebraska before enrolling?

I would imagine that most schools have their 2020/2021 scholarships already tied up? Would that be correct? Would King have been better off waiting until season's end where more opportunities might open up?

To me is just gives the impression that King is really only interested in minutes while staying in a major conference. The following headline just about says it all-

So... why doesn't King have to sit out a year?

Signed... Micah Potter

He may have to. Hasn't been settled yet.

That was a huge road win. Would have been such a shame for Trice to have such a great game and end up blowing the game on two front end 1 and 1 misses in the last minute.

Pretty nice win for Wisconsin. I have felt their recent run was a bit aided by mostly playing not good teams and playing the decent ones at home. The later being meaningful due to the struggle Big Ten teams have had on the road.

This is their first big road win in a solid month and a half. Probably a safe bet the can avoid the 8/9 line now. If they can avoid the 7 seed they certainly have some Sweet 16 potential in them with the right match ups. I think there is some potential dud 2 seeds this year too...so I am betting someone gets one generous Sweet 16 match up due to that.

Sounds weird, but being a 6 seed instead of a 5 seed may be a better outcome.

UW could beat anyone on the country and could probably also lose to almost anyone.

2nd in the B10 after tonight’s win. Crazy. Good turnaround. Hope they keep it going.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I really thought they were going to stink this year and after the first two months there was little evidence to the contrary. Now I’m really excited to see what this team can do in the tourney. They might not even need a favorable draw to win some games.

This is at least the 15th year in the last 22 years UW basketball has outperformed how they "look" during December-January. Man I love UW basketball.

Lunardii has them as a five seed.

December 2019 Badgers basketball team + Micah Potter - Kobe King = not December 2019 Badgers basketball team

I like to think most teams are better than their December version. Pretty typical in basketball.

Well yeah, but some improve more than others...

Consistency has improved greatly. Even in January, when they were winning big games at home against MD and MSU, they were getting crushed at Purdue and Minnesota. Offense has been experiencing fewer prolonged droughts, which has really helped.

I would believe anything from Elite 8 to first round exit at this point. CBB seems to have gotten real simple: make 3s, you win.

Or, stop the other team from making 3s and you win? That's where things can get complicated.

Count me as someone who believes 3-pt. defense is essentially random, or at least generally non-predictive.

It's not FT defense, of course, but I think it's much closer to that end of the spectrum than overall Defensive Efficiency in terms of evaluating a team's ability. Maybe that's controversial analytically, I don't know.

Gard's stop the 3 don't worry about 2's defense especially with a lead late in games has been interesting. Have to make your free throws though. Sort of the opposite of what the Bucks do.

I'm not trying to argue with you here, I totally get how "open 3 pointers with nobody closing out on you" is pretty much exactly the same as FT shooting "defense." The number of those opportunities a team gets is 100% linked to the philosophy of the defense though, so I'm just closer to the overall Deff side of the spectrum.

Basically, 3FG% is a pretty "random" stat but 3FGA/FGA is linked very closely to a defensive style/philosophy.
