Yah, getting 1G Spectrum internet on Saturday. They were trenching across the street a couple days ago. The salesman showed up yesterday and said he had to sell 17 houses per month or he loses his job.

Brightspeed had done 3mb for a while and then they just dropped service. Elon Musk had a lot of tree coverage so only got me maybe 3mb. Living in the middle of nowhere (though not quite AKCheesehead nowhere) sure makes fast internet nice. Time to stream some baseball and connect to people via Playstation.

Also apparently I say a half-hearted/monotone/sarcastic "Yay" a lot, but it doesn't bug me because if I have to have a 'thing,' that's not too bad.

I'd be happy if my provider would just upgrade the highspeed offering from 10MB to like 25MB. Generally 10 MB is enough, but I can't stream and be on Brewerfan at the same time since the dumb adds use that much bandwidth

I work from home and frequently need to push web application deployments to our IaaS in the cloud.  The 10MB upload speed is very slow.

So, I'll go from 500 down / 10 up to 1G up / down asynchronous.  It will be cheaper even after the 1-year incentive comes off the books.  It seems too good to be true.

Minecraft server in the works?  😄

I wish there was a way to get fiber but not have to drill a hole in your wall.  I rent, so I'm stuck with either cable (pre-wired) or 5G cellular (and living in a densely populated area, cellular probably isn't going to be very reliable for higher speeds).

If your place still has coax then you can do moca.

Fiber installed yesterday.  I went from 400MB down / 10 MB up with Spectrum to 1G Up / 1G down with AT&T.  Disconnected my existing Wi-Fi router and plugged it into the AT&T router.  Seamless!!!!!  Now I have what is equivalent to 4 VLANS.  WOOT!

Did I mention that after the promos are over, I will be paying $10/month less for 1G fiber than I was with Spectrum.

Funny story -- I call to cancel my Spectrum service.  They said, "You have been a customer for 27 years.  Why are you cancelling?"  I said I work from home and there would be random outages at all times of the day.  That, and the price was better.  Really the main reason was the lack of reliability with Spectrum.

She started talking and then the call was dropped.  I guess it isn't only their internet service that drops at random.

Back in the day I would have to talk to Spectrum whenever there was an issue. I hated it. My GF (now wife) was used to spending all day on the phone as an administrative assistant so she would volunteer. Since the account was in my name, they would allow her to talk for me by saying she was calling for her 'elderly father'. She'd go through all the different plans on the phone with the rep, and for effect I'd stand within earshot using an old man voice, yelling stuff like "All I want is Wheel of Fortune, and my sports!!! And House!!!"

Good times.

I'm talking about service providers and bringing internet into my home.  My place is small enough where the wifi router covers it just fine.

The only options I have as far as providers are cable and 5g, and the people I know who've tried the 5g options haven't had a good experience nor the speeds they promise.  For fiber, they'd have to drill a hole from outside to bring it into my home.

My daughter got 5g in a well-populated Milwaukee suburb.  Very bad service if working from home and having any type of meetings.

The hole for the fiber was maybe 1/2 inch in diameter.  They used silicone to fill it, so no worries there.  There is a box that has to go on the side of the house, though.  That is the dmarc.  I couldn't  get away from that.  They are going to come later to bury the line.  Right now, I just have a cable running in my grass with a bunch of flags.

BTW:  the tech called me and said that the company that destroyed the side of my yard (many holes, rocks sticking up, water pooling where it didn't pool before, etc.) were in the neighborhood to fix damage they had done.  When I walked the dogs yesterday, I saw some of their work -- it was very good.  We will see what they will do with my yard.

To finally have more than 2mb internet, Spectrum can drill a hole in my house big enough for the tech to craw through, for all I care.

Even my boss was suggesting I "definitely don't" poison the big oak trees in my yard so the State would have to pay for their removal and I would have a clearer sky for Starlink.

Three more weeks to wait. People at church always ask what's new and I struggle to come up with new ways of saying "Nothing". But it's this. This is what I'm looking forward to.

Totally unrelated, I'm taller than most and it's become a thing for me to always sit directly in front of the same older lady at church every single week. We both laugh and she hits me with the bulletin. I keep suggesting I might change churches because I don't much like this one, and she says "But you can't, because I wouldn't be there." It's coming to be my favorite part of the week. Her husband usually wears his Ray Nitschke jersey to service.

I was concerned that the holes and extensive damage to my yard would not be fixed.  This was from the fiber installation (main trunk for the block).  I am happy to say they came through yesterday and did a good job.  Could have thrown some more grass seed in there, but it was a lot better than I thought it would be.

Great job (contractor of...) AT&T.

Refinanced my mortgage today from a really crappy rate to a mediocre rate.
