Exciting!  I wonder if it's just for the doubleheader on Monday or for a longer stint.

Concerned that they'll need some length out of the bullpen with both Ashby and Small starting (if that is the case.) Hopefully Burnes gets them 7 today.

Bringing the lefties, baby.

We haven’t had a stretch of home grown starters of this quality come up through our system at this level…ever.   Great feather in Stearns’ cap.

Rename thread to one call, that's small.

Looking forward to it and kind of exciting to have both the young guys starting the same day

unless replacing another player put on the injured or leave list, ethan small will have to remain on optional assignment for at least 15 days.

From Small’s 2.2 IP:

.571 BABIP - some bad luck there

57% GB

4 K is great

4 BB is not

4.64 FIP, respectable

Curious when we will see him again. Obviously, a microscopic sample size. Better than Ashby’s debut against the Cubs ?

Ashby just has that "it" factor with his stuff, though. Small pretty clearly does not. He's more of that typical lefty starter who is going to have to rely on control and command because he's not going to overpower you. And as long as that walk rate stays high, he's probably not going to play a major role for awhile.

Too many walks, I agree. Small has a much better K/9 rate and OPS allowed in the minors compared to Brent Suter (when he was in the minors). Granted, a lot of Suter’s time came at Colorado Springs, hitters park.

Maybe Small can be effectively wild out of the bullpen? In the short term, aiming to get six or nine outs rather than going 6 innings.

this is small's second optional assignment since 2 may. he may be sent on three more optional assignments this year before having to be exposed to waivers.

I really like his fastball-change combo. With better control and an average 3rd pitch I think he could be a very sold 3rd starter

He has only landed 54% of his pitches, for strikes. He won't be anything in the major leagues unless he can get that percentage up significantly. Otherwise, he's constantly behind in counts and doesn't have the stuff to blow it by hitters.
