Job Heyman reports that Soto is kind of, sort of, halfway on the block.

As a caveat, the report indicates that a Soto trade seems unlikely, that the Padres haven’t yet given up on the season, and that they aren’t even in any hurry to deal Snell or Hader.  Of course, this could all amount to a signal to the league to try harder, since they’re further away from a playoff spot than the Chicago Cubs are at the moment.

I’ll put my cards on the table and say I’ve wanted Soto on the team for a long, long time.  I may fairly be described as a “prospect hugger” by some, but for a year and a half of Soto, I might be willing to send almost anybody to San Diego.  In the apparent absence of Ohtani, I can’t imagine a more impactful hitter available, which means, the price would surely be high.  The Padres don’t need to trade him,  and they just paid a kings ransom for him last season, so I’d imagine they’d hold out for Chourio, and quite possibly more.  That would hurt, indeed, but I’d at least think about it for a few days as the calendar keeps marching to August…

What say you?

Intriguing...but I wouldn't want to part with Chourio or Quero in the deal - would need to include 1-2 of the young MLB-ready OFs (Frelick, Mitchell, Wiemer) plus a high end arm (Uribe? Misiorowski?) and a low level lotto ticket, with the thought being after Soto leaves any OF void would get readily filled by Chourio.  If the price is steeper than that, and it probably would be, I would pass.

Best I would do is Frelick and Quero. Ironically, it is almost exactly a "fair" deal according to BTV. Honestly, I don't know if I'd do it if given the chance.

I bet they’d love to recoup some value on that deal.

Gave up CJ Abrams (2.1 WAR this year), MacKenzie Gore (1.8 WAR) and James Wood (Top 5 prospect in MLB), plus Robert Hassell (Top 40ish at time of trade, struggling this year) and Jarlin Susana (19 yo pitcher with 3.90 ERA / 4.26 FIP in Carolina League).

And so far the Padres got a trip to the NLCS out of it, and barring a miraculous run over the last two months a lost season.

I would guess no one blows them away at the deadline and they instead extend Soto over the offseason plus sign Ohtani too (why not?) for a combined billion dollars.

I was today years old when I learned that you don’t have to put “Rumor” in the title.  Good to know…

Hah, yes, that's done automatically on the forum side of things!

But also, thanks so much for writing this up for us!

The prospect cost will surely be too high. I can't imagine they would pull the trigger without chourio or both of black/mis, and those offers probably include players to go with them. I really like this potential 2 year window but don't want to get stuck down by the pirates beyond 2024.

It really is tempting, especially if you intend to bring everyone back next season. It would be the all in thing we have all pined for in the Burnes/Woodruff years. Plus, if you win the WS this year you can pull a Marlins and have a garage sale in the offseason and rebuild. No to Chourio but anything else I could probably learn to live with if we are talking just 2 top prospects and change.

The correct answer here then is....so blow them away. Very simple, very easy.

I do wonder what the cost would be on someone like Soto. Not sure how "simple" the situation would be, though. The scenario you suggest actually sounds quite complicated.

I just don't like the guy. I'll be accused of being old-fashioned, but I don't like his showing up pitchers for throwing him balls/walking him. I like bat-flips and celebrations and think old school retribution for such things is ridiculous. But his taking a close pitch? It's so annoying.

Preller doesn't really know what he's doing, so can we come up with a package that has good optics but is actually garbage? Do we have top-100 prospects that we think are overrated? And throw in some fillers so he can get the headline of having traded Soto for like 8 players.

Realistically I think we might be on the 'trade for Soto' bus one year from today when the price will be better.

I don't particularly care, but I've seen people posting it on Twitter and different places. Anything that brings fans in and that's a VERY stupid thing, but it just shows some swagger and makes one of the dullest "plays" in baseball mildly entertaining. So I'm all for that.

I'm all for Tatis. I hated when as a rookie, he hit a 2nd grand slam and he had to deal with the other team yelling at him, but our team as well. I love seeing personality in the game...and sometimes that includes the heels. A guy like Carlos Gomez or...every Cards player in the last 30 years.

I don't really see it as showing up pitchers either. At least compared to any other sport. Guys do something, they celebrate and do whatever.

I also remember when Griffey Jr was considered disrespectful for the backward hat in BP and things like that-that I thought benign.

That might make for an interesting thread title all by itself😄.

I've been waiting for someone who likes doing these deep digs to go through all the Padres trades and come up with a team comprised of Padres prospects that were traded away.

I know that bullpen would be...incredible. They still get to keep guys like Tatis. Prospects acquired for veterans they traded away. I bet THAT team would be ~100M cheaper and much better with an elite-elite farm system.

I only pickup Soto if you are acquiring at least another bat as well. It is clear Atlanta is the front runner in the NL so we would need to upgrade to get around their level. (assuming they don't add as well)

Does this lineup and our pitching re-enforcements give us a chance?

Yelich (LF)

Soto (RF)

Contreras (C)

Santana (1B)

Jimenez/Tellez (DH)

Adames (SS)

Anderson (3B)

Urias (2B)

Wiemer (CF)

Yes I know bites of the apple is the philosophy but this would be our best team in a while. If you don't feel like this will give us a decent shot, stick with Frelick and Tellez.
