Ben Clemens with a look today at how teams are faring at getting the runner home from third with less than two outs.

Brewers come in 19th in opportunities (202) and 25th in conversion rate (66.8%), but 7th in runs per opportunity (1.52).

Very interesting.

Being weak in both number of opportunities and conversion rate is a pretty deadly combination. Neither surprises me, though I often feel like a low number of opportunities is an even bigger problem than the conversion percentage.

The number of runs per opportunity does surprise me. I wonder how many of the runs come in situations that are less critical, like in later innings with either a big lead or big deficit. A 3;run HR late in a 10-1 game would obviously have less impact on the outcome than a sac fly or single that breaks a tie in the last of the 8th.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Give Frelick the day off against the tough veteran lefty to reset:

(1) Yelich LF

(2) Contreras C

(3) Canha DH

(4) Santana 1B

(5) Monasterio 2B

(6) Wiemer CF

(7) Adames SS

(8) Taylor RF

(9) Anderson 3B

That WAS interesting. Thanks a lot for making my head hurt lol.

Actually, and this is impossible to prove w/o climbing inside a players' psyche, I think a large part of the Brewers' problem in this regard is thinking about what they need to do to deliver the run instead of staying with their same approach.

My thinking for a lineup:

3b: Monasterio

lf: Canha

c: Contreras

1b: Santana

ss: Adames

cf: Wiemer

2b: Toro

rf: Taylor

dh: Woodruff (let's hope for some 2018 magic)

Give Frelick and Yelich a "reset" day... and let Woodruff rake some more.

It’s funny, but I doubt Woodruff has taken any swings since 2021 and last thing we need is one of our aces getting injured doing non-pitching things.

Yelich also has really good career #s against Kershaw and got one of the two hits last night.

Small sample size alert, but Woodruff's career OPS against Kershaw is about 450 points higher than Yelich's...

I don’t think my expectations of Canha and Santana were overly high, but I certainly expected better than .550ish OPS from them. Just a continuation of the black holes at 1B and DH. 20 hits in 105 ABs. And they are batting 3rd and 4th tonight, ahead of Adames. Yay.

id cut the head off of a live rooster, but I think that’s only when there’s a hex on a glove.

Is stroman out for the season for the cubs?

Their fans think so. Rib cartilage fracture? Sounds painful

Reds winning but White Sox 3 Cubbies……zero in the 5th

Just saw that the Cubs had a mound visit to settle the pitcher after 5 straight balls to start the fifth...

2 pitches later, the pitcher grooved one and Sheets took him deep for a 2-run bomb.
