oof. wish they'd done that in the first place but hindsight is 20/20 and whatnot

I ask only because I’m unsure, but if the brewers were unable to come to a 2 year deal with Woody, could they just outright release him? If he’s likely to miss the entire season, his contract is a significant sum for an organization like the Brewers.

They could not offer him arbitration, thus in affect releasing him.

Kind of what I thought, it would be a brutal decision but we simply cannot afford to pay him 10 million plus to not pitch if we don’t do an extension. And at this point, offering an extension to a guy coming off this injury would be organizational malpractice. Fear it’s the end for Woody in MKE

I don't think it would be organizational malpractice to simply push back his FA by a year...It's probably in the best interest of both club and pitcher.

Not similar in labrum vs capsule and cause of injury, but similar surgical procedure and rehab. Anterior labral repair includes repairing the capsule. In Woody’s they are “tightening up the capsule” in essence repairing it.

either way, its a large decision that the team needs to make he would account for about 8% of the brewers payroll to not pitch. If Arnold and Woody can work something out to avoid arbritation this year and get a prove it deal in 2025, I'm on board.

Guess it was indeed more than inflammation. Sucks as Woody is absolutely elite when healthy. Hope the team can work out a two year deal with him.

I don't.

I have zero interest in guys coming back from shoulder surgery.

FWIW, I say hold onto Burnes for now. Trade him at the deadline if the team falls out of contention, but otherwise take the comp pick and let Johnson and co. go to work. He'll be plenty motivated to have a season more in line with 2021 in a contract year.

I have little interest in DFAing Woody. Makes the organization look bad after all he's done and you lose one of your foundation pieces for nothing.

MLBTR projected $11.6M, would guess he signs something like 2/25.

$5M this year to rehab, and then $20M (right around the same as the QO) for 2025.

I mean…this would be an epically terrible contract for the Brewers. Is a team honestly going to give him a $25mil deal for 2025? If not, why are you doing this. After an injury riddled year and then missing the next year completely, I’m not sure he could get much more than like $10mil, but maybe a few teams get crazy offering him a bunch of money. Idk, but $25mil seems nuts.

The question now becomes does this affect their plans with Burnes?

Yeah I can't figure out if this makes it more or less likely they trade Burnes.  Could make an argument either way.

Could maybe shed more light on Arnold's comments from the other day that he expects Burnes to be in the organization next season.

You're not DFAing him, you're just not offering him arbitration and making him a FA. Which he is going to be after next year anyway. So the alternative is literally just to pay him to do nothing next year and then become a free agent anyway.  I don't know how that's better given our already limited resources.
