The world's gone topsy turvy when the most talented baseball player (athlete?) in history earns more money than the hedgefund managers and real-estate investors in ownership

Ah yes creative accounting…….its going to be 20 years until he gets all of the money…….then of course taxes will take a big chunk……tweets that equate income with net worth are so stupid……

I mean by that logic…..if you are worth a million dollars and somebody else is set to make 100k for the next 12 years……then they are worth more than you!

Anybody making that trade? lol

Ohtani is deferring $68M of the $70M annually according to the Athletic. I have zero clue how this allowed. Absolute ********.

It shouldn’t be allowed but Manfred is a ******** so it probably will be.

Does this get LA around the luxury tax? If so I can't imagine the other owners will allow this.

Only $460M or $46M a year will count towards the luxury tax. This is just a blatant attempt to skirt the luxury tax and allow the Dodgers to spend more money now to help their team without going over the tax.

This is within the rules of the current cba, but I bet this forces a change when the next CBA is negotiated.  An Ohtani rule to prevent teams from abusing contracts/tax avoidance

The real people who need to put an end to this are politicians in states with high income taxes. As many have pointed out, the main reason this works for both parties is that Ohtani can dodge California taxes on the deferred part of the contract. So he's not taking as much of a pay cut with the deferral as one might think.

It has been well established that more money doesn't always equate to more wins or more championships but this spits in the face of anything even remotely considered fair.

Wait a minute, the guy chose deferred payments (i.e. taking less money) to help his team continue to sign talent and make the team better and we're holding it against him?

I don't see anyone holding it against him.

I’m not holding it against him…..but for competitive balance purposes it’s not good for the most of the rest of the teams  who are already trying to compete with the Dodgers with vastly different revenue streams.

This kind of deal only makes that more difficult…….which isn’t in the best interest of the game.

I guess too bad so sad. Ohtani wanted to defer money to help the team. Were the Dodgers just supposed to say no?

They shouldn't have been allowed to say yes or no because the CBA shouldn't have allowed this. You can bet the next CBA will get rid of this.

I do wonder if the other shoe will drop for the Dodgers down the line.

In theory their finances are fine until 2038 when their $8 billion TV rights deal expires. And surely the revenue that they initially bring in from Ohtani will keep them afloat for a few years. But this isn't a $1 million/year deferral like Bobby Bonilla, this is some serious cash that they will own Ohtani in the 2030s-early 2040s when his ability to add value to the Dodgers is long gone. And given what's happening with bankruptcies, that RSN money is far from ironclad. Some teams have seem most of their RSN income evaporate overnight.

In the short term, the Dodgers are going to be the late-90s Yankees, but this isn't coming without considerable risk to the long-term financial health of the franchise.

I've never wished for a career-diminishing injury on any player...but after seeing this type of deferral bs I wouldn't shed too many tears if we are robbed of peak ohtani in a couple seasons and his draw to the Japanese market resembles that of Ricky Bobby slinging gum so the Dodgers don't capitalize on that market share.

Ohtani is likely making more in endorsements than his contract would've paid him if he just took all the money upfront.  Not exactly "taking one for the team" as much as it's "exploiting a rules loophole" to avoid annual luxury tax penalties with little to no ability to reset without completely gutting their organization.

It all makes me pretty sick, and the players should be kind of ticked due to the unintended consequences it's going to cause.

Too bad so sad? Wow that’s a good one.

With this attitude you can’t actually be a Brewers fan who wants them to have the best chance of winning.

But if I’m a dodgers fan……Go Dodgers! Sign 2 or 3 more big money guys this offseason with that money that you don’t have to pay out for 10-20 years!

MLB should really void the deal, but they can't....

Wish the owners and players would work together for the good of the game for once instead of the good of their wallets.

Why would the players fight this? Ohtani is getting a larger contract than he would have if it wasn't deferred and the deferred money can be spent on other players right now.

Why would the owners fight this? It saves them money in the long run.

Everyone seems to be saying this is not good for competition. Neither or those groups care about MLB being competitive so they will do nothing about it.

Most importantly, if the Brewers would have made this deal most of you would be praising Matt and Mark for how smart they are.

Small market owners would be the ones fighting this.

This entire situation is just plain gross.

I couldn't do it, but I wish I could just wash my hands of MLB and quit following it all together.

Well... let's do it ourselves...

Let's start a league-wide fan boycott of the Dodgers.

I'm unsure of how to do this sort of thing, but I feel really confident that fanbases from the other 28 teams would be willing to sign a petition, or a boycott, in order to enforce (in spirit!) a boycott of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are operating outside of the bounds of the spirit of fair competition (according to the CBA).

Heck, even of there was a meme of fans across MLB wearing paperbag-heads due to their embarrassment of going to a game featuring the "Dodge-the-Luxury-Tax"ers. Perhaps that could create some traction. FOR US! the FANS!

I really doubt it. None of them are coming close to signing top free agents anyway.

They wouldn't fight the bigger markets exacerbating their competitive advantage on the field???

I think they would.
